Import images from other scan

Post by elenistica_87 »

Hello everybody!
We have made 3 works with the three different levels of accuracy: low, medium and high. I mean, for each position, we have scan three times.
To save time, we just took pictures for the Medium Quality. We thought that just copying the 178 files .img of the medium scans to the corresponding folder of both the low and high scans, we could import to Cyclone both point cloud and colour. However it did not work.
Is it any way of importing the images? The scanner is placed exactly in the same position, and the quality of images does not differ when the quality of the scan is changed, in fact, it takes always 1 minute, and always 178 files are generated.
Thank you!

Assuming your using core.

I haven't done it for a while but I seem to remember if you right click drag the image folder from one modelspace to the next and do a copy you can right click over the modelspace and "apply multi image"

Thank you! I am using Register 360, but i finally did it: i exported the panoramic images from the project on which the images where upload, and then, in the other projects, click button and re import panoramic. I tried it the first time but it did not work i do not know why, but now it works!!! :lol:

I don't understand why would you create 3 different scan on each position..

Just do the high density the medium and low res could be done with subsampling..

But if you start the scan from the same position the orientation can change even if you were aware of the scan head orientation all the time. So the same image might not be good for the low/high res scan.

I'm a little confused by this operation as well, :lol: , But I always wondered what this option does in Register 360 as I never really used it... Sounds like this Auto Adjust setting must be doing something behind the scenes?? The Help manual says it's for a P20 and when an external camera is used. I'm confused how it worked out in the end, lol.

If the setup names in all datasets were the same as the images you're importing, I suppose the software won't know the difference when Re-Importing images, but I don't know how it'd know the orientation of the images vs the scan since they totally seperate from one another... Unless the JPG's exported somehow contain that info... I'm confused haha

Thanks for your contribution. We are doing the same work three times just to compare the workflows as a research work ;) It is true that you then can reduce the point cloud but i think the point cloud obtained is different when you acquire it with low quality than when you subsample it. Anyway, the doubt was about using a panoramic image for other scan taken from the same position, and it finally worked.

It is interesting to export and re import panoramic images because you can edit the colours of the panoramic images using GIMP or photoshop.

Thank you very much for your help. The orientation of the three scans seem to be same as the panoramic image matches with the preview of the point cloud :)

??
So let's assume we have a medium resolution (at FARO this would be 10,000x5x000 columnsxrows)
Then we want to estimate how much you need to turn the scanner (left right) to get a one pixel off error with a 360° scan:

Let's assume our device has a diameter of 20 cm, so radius device is 0.1 m
Next we want to see how much 1 pixel off means
360° / 10,000 scan columns = 0.036 [°] or 0.0006283185307 [rad] (°=>rad: * pi / 180)
Then we need the formula for the arc length:
l = radius * angle [rad] = 0.1 * 0.000628... = 0.00006283185307 [m]

Meaning when you move the outer cover space more than 0.062 millimeter your picture is already mapped wrongly.

Of course this is only under the premise that Leica is not doing some image2point cloud fit under the hood.
But seeing this one pixel off with your eyes when everything is blurry when you zoom in. Nah don't think so.

I have the P16. How does the software match up the photo to the scans when using a ninja nodel or 360 camera to take the 360 photos. There are workflows for using external cameras but to your point, how does register360 match the 360 photo (cube) to the point cloud?
