How to convert Recap *.RCS to *.E57 or *.LAS

Post by Robonus »

Hi,

We've got about 300 GB of Autodesk Recap RCS files of about 4km of Amsterdam citycenter environment. We're looking to extract only the building facades from those files. We have got boundarys of 1m offset of those facades.

Unfortunally, Recap can't clip within a boundary. That's why i want to bring everything to Lastools or cloudcompare to throw away 95% of all the rubbish and keep only the points within the boundary.
But Recap is extremely slow in exporting to *.E57 files. That would cost me about a week to export file by file.

I've looked into FME, but that can't read RCS files.
I've looked into DECAP.exe (the command-line tool for Recap to batch automate processes) but i can only find import commands, no export function :(

The only other program i could find that can read RCS files is Pointfuse, that is not available to me, and can't clip within a boundary (for as far as i could tell).

Who knows what other software can read *.RCS files or knows another way to convert about 600 RCS files of 500MB each.

Thanks in advance.

I would use Pointcab for that.

If you have acces to leice register 360 or even rent it for a month. You can use the register 360 command line tools to import and then export rcs files so that way you have a fully automatic scriptable solution. I don't really know other solution maybe faro scene could export these files, but the same required as in leica so you have to import and then export.

Possible all the registration softwares can do this task like, trimble realworks, riscan, cyclone register, cyclone register 360, faro scene (maybe LT as well)

Faro scene lt is a free viewer that can create fls files which is readable straight from cloud compare so you might skip a step with this solution. And it is also free.

Ps i was wrong scene cannot process rcs files. And i was also wrong about the register 360 command line tools it cannot import any data type as the main program just leica raw files from rtc360 and blk360. So you have to import then export. I don't think that it would be faster then exporting straight from recap.

Hi Robin,

SCC will also read Recap files and can easily extract smaller areas and export them to E57. Full disclosure, I'm the developer so totally biased. Drop me a PM if you'd like a demo license to play with,

Shane
