Georeferenced point clouds appearing like stripes

Post by Nuno »

Hi!

When I import a drone point cloud ungeoreferenced or already georeferenced with real coordinates (with Metashape), usually it works fine.
But when I join a TLS point cloud (ungeorreferenced) and try to georeference using "Picking points", ICP or even with “Translate/Rotate” command, the visualization changes a lot, showing points like stripes.
Also, generating DEMs, orthos or exporting in any format, the point cloud remains this bad look.

Why does this happen and how can I solve it?
I tried to look for and solve it in different ways, but I don't master the subject, and so I couldn't understand what to do.

It has been a systematic problem, and having the point clouds georeferenced in CC is very useful!

Thanks!

Which version are you using?

Normally, if after a tranformation is applied the coordinates become too large, CC should suggest you to apply a 'Global shift' (just as if you were loading a cloud with already large coordinates). If not, this may indicate that you are using an old version (and you might want to test again with the latest 2.13 alpha version).

If yes, make sure you always accept the Global Shift (otherwise, these stripes will appear due to the loss of precision when trying to store large coordinates in 32 bits memory slots, or displaying them with OpenGL).

Thanks for the answer. I'm using the latest version.
I'll watch out for Global shift when I insert the clouds for the first time. It solved my problem.
Thank you!
