Compressing .LGS-Files

Post by VisoProOskar »

Hello!
Our company archives all customers old LGS-files on an external storage device, the device is starting to get filled and I was wondering if there is a benefit to compressing LGS-Files.

If using 7zip/Winrar/WinZip etc. can you reduce an LGS significantly? All our LGS-Files are over 50GB so it takes a while to compress them.
What results can I expect if compressing an LGS?

TLDR; Big LGS-Files, is it worth using compression software to reduce filesize, if VERY rarely eccessing files?

Depends on where you're storing the archives and is there a per TB cost per year for your storage. I only tend to compress stuff where I'm going to get a decent compression ratio, e.g. 2x or better but don't use the cloud for backing up very big data.

It's not worth it in my opinion, using 7zip LZMA2 compression LGS only compresses like 85%, (e.g. 100gb becomes 85gb) and it takes a loooooong time.

Be careful with external storage, hopefully you are cloning your storage or taking other actions to mitigate the risk of drive failure.

Lgs files seems to be already compressed, there is not much you can do to decrease their size, without data loss.

I Use WinRAR as I'm in a similar boat with compressing all our past projects to minimize storage space for our cloud based servers. I've never encountered issues when decompressing them, so I'll continue to use WinRAR. I don't see a huge % in decreased size, but maybe 10% is a decent average, so the compressed files are around 90% of the original.
