Hi from the UK

Post by timjwes »

Hi,

My name is Tim, I have a small engineering business where we have evolved into specialising in building asset hierarchies, bills of materials and other asset 'insight' related services.

Up until now we have increased the use of technology over time and now find myself at a potential crossroads where I will be adding either/or laser scanning & photogrammetry to provide a more immersed insight into our customers industrial plants and facilities.

I am here hoping to learn how to get started and hopefully learn from the best.

I have no intention at this stage of getting into 'proper' surveying (ie for BIM or construction purposes) but more for providing visually accurate insights for those who either cant or dont want to visit the plants that they own or manage.

One visualised model of a plant can save hundreds of man-hours for our clients own personnel, so I really see the value in this technology.

Many thanks,

Tim, Leeds UK

Hi Tim!
I think you've come to the right place! You'll definitely find the types of technologies you're looking for here, along with the people who know how to use it.

I don't want to turn this into an ad, but what you're describing is exactly what the company I work for does. Including the integration of the asset information you're describing with the interactive, virtual representation of a facility. Can either assist with a full service (including data capture/survey) or just the software side with you collecting the facility data. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat about it a little more.

Best of luck!

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the reply, yes I would definitely like to chat.

I'm still doing things in the somewhat old fashioned way, using P&IDs & layout drawings with markups and supporting photos to relay the information, in addition to this I started using 360 photography and creating virtual tours. While the 360 tours are a step in the right direction - I have come to realise that 3D scanning and photogrammetry are where its at.

Without committing too much to any one technology stack, I am starting the journey to producing fully immersive insights with Unreal Engine - this linked to a webapp (currently being developed - originally integrated with the vtour) really is the future for the chemical plants and refineries I work with.
