Compare point cloud to 3d model

Post by mksaoudi »

Hello guys,

I'm working in a project where i'm asked to compare between the point cloud (from laser scanner) and the 3d model of a building frontage.
I usually work with cloud compare but it doesn't allow to import 3d models data (rvt or ifc for exemple).

Is there any solution or software to do this ?

Export either fbx from Revit or 3D solid DWG. Job done.

ClearEdge - Verity if you have NavisWorks

I think Cintoo has some tools there as well

Hi,

You can use UNDET software to compare the 3D models with point clouds.

Undet for Revit (https://www.undet.com/knowledge-base/un ... sis-tools/)
Undet for SketchUp (https://youtu.be/fUkKS3NLli4)
Undet Point Cloud Software provides software solutions for AutoCAD, ARES Commander, Revit, and SketchUp point cloud users to save time, increase efficiency, and reduce errors in creating 3D models and 2D drawings.

Hi!

I can grant you access to JP Interactive Viewer. This software allows you compare your Point Cloud with a 3D model. With a JPIV plugin, you can upload 3d models from Navvisworks. You can try JPIV with a free trial account with no string attached.

You may want to look into NUBIGON as well. It supports DXF and OBJ.

Here's a quick tutorial on bringing in meshes:

And here's a good example of a DXF + Point Cloud combination:

+1 for ClearEdge3D - Verity

Go here... Verity by ClearEdge3D

You will need Navisworks, but it does a great job at this type of project, especially if your model file is well structured.

You can test out the scan-model comparison tools in the Cintoo Cloud free trial, available here: https://cintoo.com/try

You can bring in your models from BIM 360 ( RVT, NWD, NWC, 3D DWG, JT, IFC formats), or upload IFCs from your disk (more formats to come shortly by the wya).

The Cintoo comparison tools can be used to compare scan to model (or vice versa), but also scan vs scan, or model vs model to show progression/changes. You can see differences using a heat map (with adjustable tolerance), or using the visual check tool, you can isolate the scan or the model using transparency to see where differences are occurring.

Here's our Youtube overview, but give the trial a go - it's best to test with your own data.

Use CloudCompare, it is free and quite powerful. ( don't forget to donate !! )
Export your model as a .stl, obj, or one of the many formats CC accepts.
We use it for measuring hull deformation/damage in boats, scanned then modelled in Rhino 3D.
