Texturing a mesh

Post by b_clive »

Hi all,

I am currently working on a project where by i need to make an orthophoto of a floor in a basement for heritage purposes. I did several scans to do the whole layout. Lighting was not ideal but i used HDR photos and before registration fixed the exposures and was happy with the result. I have a couple of issues though.
  • Texturing with cloud to mesh doesn’t produce a very good mesh
  • Texturing with smart texture is doing a pretty good job but not perfect and then it is too difficult to edit the texture afterwards
  • Using standard texture it is easier to edit the texture afterwards but it leaves that irritating black circle beneath the scanner position
Would love to hear you opinion on this.
Thanks in advance :)

Hello Clive

It is difficult to precisely give you the right advice without the data.
Anyway, there is a small video about the different texturing ways in Cyclone 3DR.

Texturing with cloud to mesh doesn’t produce a very good mesh: the mesh is textured from the colours of the point cloud using the command Texture from Cloud that you can use after a standard 3D meshing.
Texturing with smart texture is doing a pretty good job but not perfect and then it is too difficult to edit the texture afterwards: difficult to understand "not perfect". Did you play with the parameters (including the pixel size)?
Using standard texture it is easier to edit the texture afterwards but it leaves that irritating black circle beneath the scanner position. How many pictures do you have? Perhaps you can adjust the textures by manually removing and updating the texture corresponding to the black areas?

        Regards

        Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for your reply. I am attaching the data for you to have a look at. would you also be needing the images folder to experiment with yourself?

For an orthophoto, I'd consider skipping the meshing altogether and using the pointcloud itself.

        Hi Martin,

But i find that the resolution of an orthophoto from a mesh is much better than the resolution from the cloud.

        Hello Clive

Considering the images, I think that what you did is not too bad.

Did you try to select the best spherical images and use the Smart Texture feature locally on separate zones ?

You probably already know it; but if some areas are still incorrect or missing, it is possible to remove the Smart texture locally using Adjust Textures. Select the mesh and run Adjust Textures. Choose the Textures display mode and the Remove All option. Remove a small area.

Then, you can complete the texture using another images (smart or standard texture) or the real color of the cloud (Preserve existing texture in all cases).

        Regards
