Mean Time Between Failure for TLSes?

Post by blupixels »

Hi Everyone

New to the forum and new to TLSes.
I am thinking of investing in a TLS to add to our workflow to create 3d models.

Can you share with me your experience on how robust they are before they 'break' and need
to get sent back for serious servicing (and how much might that cost)

I know its a factor of how careful one handles it and how often its used, but do share you experiences.

Thanks!

Our Faro M70 is soon four years old and we have sent it three times for repairs due to unexpected faults.
The unit is in moderate use, I would estimate 100-120 days per year and 5000-6000 scans per year.
We have a maintenance contract that covers yearly calibration and maintenance, plus repair work and hardware in case of a breakdown. I would absolutely recommend that in spite of the price tag.

Please also note that the turnaround time for maintenance (planned or unplanned) is several weeks, so you should have a backup device of your own or access to a rental unit if you have scanning work to do in the meantime.

First time poster here, I want to say thanks for all the help and knowledge I've been able to glean from this forum.
I felt now was an opportunity to add my experience with our Leica P20, we recently sent it off for its annual calibration, hadn't noticed any issues and was scanning with it a couple of days before it went away. however we were informed there was a fault on the azimuth ring board which was unrepairable and it was returned to us uncalibrated. essentially its dead.
it was purchased in early 2014 in preference to the older C10 but the P20 wasn't in production long before the P40 came along, which might explain why there was nothing they could do for it. Overall I couldn't fault it, always got good results from it, just a reminder that the older models may not have as much life in them as you think.
