Point Cloud to Plane Comparison and Export

Post by EngSurv12 »

Hello all,

I would like some advice on the best piece of software to use to accomplish this particular task. I have a single scan of a building wall and am looking to (1) generate a reference plane on said wall (2) compare the differences in distance between the two objects (3) export these values in something like an ASCII file for further statistical analysis

So far, I have tried using Leica Infinity and was able to get as far as generating a Comparison Map using the point cloud and plane. However, I don't see an option for exporting these values. I have tried selecting the comparison map and exporting as different file types but each of them just come up as empty files. I have been successful in using CloudCompare for this workflow. However, I would prefer to use a time like this to better familiarise myself with Cyclone 3DR, which seems like quite a robust piece of software. I see that there are options in 3DR for generating planes but am hoping someone can guide me on exactly what the different properties options that appear when selecting 'Draw Plane' mean, as well as how to compare the point cloud and plane and exporting those values.

In summary, if anyone can give me advice on whether the full workflow is possible in Infinity and further guidance on how to accomplish it using 3DR, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you

3DReshaper or Cyclone 3DR as they have rebadged it

Hi Amron,

do you have any access to metrology software packages (maybe in other depts of your university) like polyworks or geomacig control? Those packages are definetly useful for these kind of application!

Could you explain exactly what process you use in CAD? Thank you

Hi Christopher,

Yes, as I explained, I have already explored 3DR but I need further help on exactly what steps to take within the software to generate a comparison and then export that out. Any further tips on this would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Sebastian,

Thank you for these suggestions. I'm not aware of whether we have these additional packages but I will look into it. Currently, the question I have is time-sensitive, which is why I preferred suggestions for solutions in Infinity or 3DR but I will definitely look into other options for the future

Thank you!

Does the Uni have a 3DR CCP?

You could always try calling Leica HDS Support if they do - 01908 513421

Unfortunately I'm not at my workstation or I'd have a look at it for you in 3DR.

It's fairly simply anyone should be able to figure this out. In short theres an elevation color map tool in autocad thats adsigned to the ucs. Simply flip and rotate the pointcloud to fit that plane and use the color gradiant tool for elevations

Hi Simeon,

Yes, I have gotten as far as generating a compare inspect view in 3DR but I'm not sure if I went about it exactly the right way or how to export the results into a .csv table.

I have already reached out to Leica support but thought I would check here while I wait for a response.

No worries!
