fine registration in rocky terrain

Post by hstmp » Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:13 am

Hello,
I've found myself a solution for aligning scans in very rocky terrain/caves and I want to check that I'm not wasting my time.

Software: CloudCompare

Problem: very rocky terrain and angular surfaces so a lot of occlusion so very limited overlap for auto registration.
Manual registration is a bore and not quite tight enough.
Adding targets isn't always an option either.

I'm starting with the CloudCompare recommendations for using the ICP, and manually chopping out the core overlap areas, but cos it's soo varied it's still
http://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/in ... m_lucky.29

not brilliant.
So then...

I'm doing a cloud to cloud comparison and clipping the SF and using the weight in the ICP to favour those bits of the 'data' cloud in the alignment.

Is this sensible? or a waste of time?

I could take more scans for more overlap, but I really don't want the data burden if I can avoid it.

Many thanks.
