OBJ in AutoCAD?
Hello,
I recently scanned some objects that are of historical significance, for the purposes of documentation as part of a restoration project. I scanned them and also took photos to model them using photogrammetry.
I have an extremely dense point cloud, however, the photo model has produced much higher quality results than the point cloud and the resulting mesh from scan data. I would like to use the photo model to produce some PDFs showing different views of each of the objects. The problem is how to go about doing this. I am using AutoCAD which does not natively support OBJ files. Any ideas?
Best,
Sam

I'm not sure what you are suggesting to do in Recap, Jared. Can you explain please?

Re: OBJ in AutoCAD?
Well from what I understand from what you are saying, you want to make pdf's to show off the good quality of the photo mesh, but CAD does not support object files?Geo Scan Surveying wrote:I'm not sure what you are suggesting to do in Recap, Jared. Can you explain please?
I'm suggesting you important the object mesh into recap and then export the images from there as recap supports object files.

Re: OBJ in AutoCAD?
Hi Sam
Did you consider giving a try to 3dreshaper?
From point cloud to textured model.
And then generate pdf (including 3dpdf)

Re: OBJ in AutoCAD?
What photogrammetry software are you using?
Autocad should import the mesh as fbx, I guess you have this option.
As an alternative you can open textured obj in cloudcompare, meshmixer, meshlab..

Cloudcompare will allow you to generate pretty good images for free, use some other free program to output your pdfs. Done!max72 wrote:What photogrammetry software are you using?

Cloudcompare also generates really really nice binary ply files that look and act great in Rhino. Can also do native PDF from rhino without buying anything.
If you are getting a better model from photogrammetry you ain't scanning right. Maybe it LOOKS better....

Re: OBJ in AutoCAD?
Hi Sam,
Arena4D Data Studio (even the free version) will allow you to open your 3D models (OBJ, 3DS, FBX, etc..) along with your point clouds and take suitable screen shots to either an image OR a PDF.
If you want some assistance just drop as an email and we can guide you through it.
Many Thanks
Mark

Re: OBJ in AutoCAD?
You could download Rhino3D and convert from OBJ to a different format that is supported by AutoCAD (the trial version allows a certain number of saves - maybe IGES or .3ds works?). Again, with Rhino, just get the desired orthographic view and print to PDF.I would like to use the photo model to produce some PDFs showing different views of each of the objects. The problem is how to go about doing this. I am using AutoCAD which does not natively support OBJ files. Any ideas?
You could also look at Meshlab which can import .obj and export a ton of formats, including .u3d, which can then be converted to pdf.
