Conveyor Modeling

Post by surveypm »

Anyone use Faro As-Built for conveyor modeling from scans? Doesn't seem to have enough tools to model frames and other parts. The manual hasn't been much help. Any tips? Thanks

Didn't do any conveyor reverse engineering, but as a prior material handling engineer, you will use the scanner for the overall layout plan and conveyor details to be taken by hand (If framing details are required).

That's kind of what we're doing now. Most of the projects I work on in manufacturing have conveyor upgrades so while layout may stay the same sections of new conveyor are installed with new packing equipment so tie-ins to existing with the new are critical connection points. Current process is to get these connection coordinates using a Robotic Total Station in the field.
I was hoping some software tools would be able to eliminate that additional step. In SCENE it's possible to get plane surfaces on the frame rails and corner point on end sections (if the scans are good enough). But you can't really do that in Faro's As-built Modeler software and using Recap point clouds in the AutoCAD As-built application doesn't have any tools that work well.
In SCENE I got good plane measurements on the frames. In the As-built AutoCAD software I couldn't do that as accurate. I don't think the Recap point cloud is good for As-built other than most building elements. I also don't think the Recap accuracy is good enough for mechanical equipment. And As-built Modeler doesn't have the plane and point features SCENE has. Faro should attempt to get the same features across their software platform.
Thanks

I am not a user of Faro products, so I can't comment on their products. But with my workflow using Surphaser, I would model using Rhino.

Also, I would suggest you get in touch with Kostadine from QuickSurface. He has something in development which may interest you. You can also send me a sample file and look at it together, DM me if you'd like to.

Thanks for the response. But I'm not allowed to share any client data. I'll look into QuickSurface.
