Faro As-Built for AutoCAD KUBIT Objects

Post by surveypm »

I’m using Faro As-Built for AutoCAD to model scan data. I’m currently using it to model existing round steel columns using the cylinder feature. When I export the CAD elements to FBX they show up as center lines with a circle at each end. They look fine shaded in AutoCAD and look fine in Navisworks. Does anyone know if KUBITCYLINDERs are different than AutoCAD cylinders and if so how to make them AutoCAD cylinders?

They are different, but can be exported as a variety of Autocad objects, or "Exploded to AutoCad 3D solids". Since you are modeling columns, I would probably use the Explode to 3D tools. See the attached images. Explode and export tools are covered in pages 192 and 333 of the AsBuilt for Autocad user manual, respectively.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the I get Unknown Command for KCSOLID. I'm using version 2018.0.4.29288.

I apologize it looks like the manual graphic and text is outdated there. Try KCTOSOLID instead. I will pass that on to our document team.

Tommy is right, the "kubit cylinder" is not going to read well into products outside of AutoCAD or users not running As-Built. Best is to EXPLODE the objects before sharing the DWG or importing to another software. If you still have a kubit cylinder on top of the now AutoCAD cylinder you can select it , then right click, select similar, delete. This will remove all kubit cylinders from the drwaing and leave only AutoCAD cylinders. Of course i recommend saving as a different drawing before doing all of this so you have the master version still in place.

If you are still having troubles then let us know... we can setup a short screen share or get you some direct support

Thanks, EXPLODE did work. It's unfortunate though as the center line of the column (KUBIT cylinder) is helpful for measuring in Navisworks in its native form but disappears once exploded in AutoCAD. Probably could live with the KUBIT cylinder if only in Navisworks, but the need to export an FBX for the Hololens forces the change. Can't have it both ways I suppose.

The kubit cylinders will still be visible as a layer in AutoCAD that is toggled off (or deleted if you select that option) when you use the kctosolid or explode commands. You could then export both sets of entities

Thanks. I originally used the ACAD explode command and that worked, but the KCTOSOLID has the option to save both as you state. The KUBIT cylinder has the center line but the surface is faceted where the ACAD cylinder is smooth both in ACAD and Navisworks. It nice to have the smooth visualization and the center line for measurements. I guess I did get the best of both.

Found one more little nugget for you. There is one option to convert cylinders to AutoCAD center lines KCTOAXIS.

If you turn on the total station ribbon commands in As-Built you will find a few more cylinder manipulation tools that work for your needs including the one Tommy suggested. Kind of a cool bonus built-in to the program...you can control many different total stations in AutoCAD and perform drafting or stake out functions

Wow! Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't paid much attention to the TS Design tab because I don't have a Total Station. There are some neat tools there when I looked at that section of the manual as you point out.
