Faro Scene Meshing Issues - Recap/Memento & Meshlab
Hi all, hopefully someone can help ASAP!
I am reasonably new to scanning and having issues meshing in Recap 360 Pro from Faro Scene Registered files. The projects seems to mesh but upon viewing them the mesh seems to jump all over the place & appears to corrugated. I am unsure if this is a graphics issue with my computer or workflow of bringing the data into Recap/meshlab.
In both example images the scan is of a concrete face.
The meshlab example is created from a .ptx file created automatically upon meshlab input.
The same issue of the corrugated looking mesh also occurs in meshlab when I try making meshes.
If anyone could help or offer any advice on best practices/processes for using Recap/meshlab and viewing the resultant meshes that would be fantastic!
Tom

Tom,
I exported my .fls scans in SCENE to .ptx files, drug those into Recap360 Pro answer meshed in the fine mode to create both mesh type files available in Recap 360 Pro then open the results in meshlab. The mesh looked very good.
I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply,
Did you register the scans in scene and then skip registration in Recap?
Also just a general question, does Recap 360 handle landscapes or structures well for meshing? Or is it only ideally used for closed objects etc.
Also my file size is rather large at just over a GB, high detail is required but decimation can be done to it if Recap does not handle file bigger files.
Attached is a photo of the structure that was scanned.
Cheers,
Tom

Depending on your final project output product, you can generate a solid meshed model with a series of photographs without a scanner. See the following thread using Autodesk Remake:

Tom,
I registered my 6 scans in SCENE only. The main difference between what you did and what I did was in the creation of the .ptx files. I made them by exporting to .ptx files in SCENE, where you said that you imported the .fls files into RECAP 360 Pro and thenot
RECAP 360 Pro made the .ptx files.
My object was a stone Church bell tower.
I will be trying out the photos to mesh very soon as that would be great
for some applications.

Hi Tom
Just curious, what was the reason you need a mesh for? Is it for structural analysis software or some other reason.

Thanks for the reply everyone.
Gregg, the final result wanted is a 3d model/mesh that can be used in solidworks or similar software.
The client has asked for a 3d mesh(IGES format or simikar) asbuilt to design new components/machinery to be integrated into the existing structure

Re: Faro Scene Meshing Issues - Recap/Memento & Meshlab
Tom,
On the information provided, one possible issue might be the actual scan data rather than the individual software programs.
On wet concrete the Faro laser scanner can sometimes give strange results which can look like a series of contours in the data. There are a number of variables so I can't tell you under what exact conditions it occurs - the colour of the concrete, the angle of incidence, how wet the concrete may be and even when the scanner was last calibrated...
The meshing software might simply be meshing the scan data as opposed to messing with the scan data (pun intended...
Does it only occur on the concrete surface and have you looked at the scan data ?
Patrick

Re: Faro Scene Meshing Issues - Recap/Memento & Meshlab
Hi Patrick,
The scanning was done in reasonably good weather conditions with the concrete reasonably dry and no terrible angle of incidence.
The point cloud computed is rather clean with no real noise associated, therefore I assumed that the mesh should be clean?
If I was to upload a small sample file would this be of help for someone to kindly attempt a mesh themselves using my data...?
Thanks,
Tom

What coordinate system is your data in?
Your screenshots look like a floating point precision issue, likely due to using georeferenced data in software that isn't capable of handling it. See this thread for a more detailed description and a workaround:
