Exporting part of the project

Post by AgnesSojka »

Hi Guys,
I have a big project in Scene 2019.2. The point cloud was too big to operate on it smoothly. So I was asked to decrease the size but stick to the same resolution :) So the only option is to divide project into small point clouds.
I created project point cloud, applied clipping box and wanted to export points located within clipping box. Unfortunately when I open the point cloud in Recap or in Autocad not all of the points are there. I would say 5th part of the points are uploaded. I tried few different formats (e57,rcp, pts) and all of them give me the same result.

The only thing I did as new ….the project point cloud is created on compressed scans (2:1). But when I export the scans without clipping box they look fine!

HELP!!!! :)

THANK YOU

Happens often in Scene...
Cleaning the project might solve the problem.

You can also export the whole project to rcp without decimating, and then use the region tools in recap to segment it, turn off all regions other than the one to export, export the regions, and then repeat the process until all regions are exported as seperate rcp/rcs files

Thank you Tommy. I don't have Recap Pro in which I believe the region tool is available. I tried Recap though to decrease the point cloud but just by deleting points. Even if I optimised the point cloud (otherwise points are still kept in the rcp file) the size didn't decrease much.

Proszę bardzo :)
I prefer CloudCompre to decimating and optimizing point cloud size.
If you eventually manage to export the whole ppc from Scene try subsampling and clipping in CC.
PM me if I could help.

Hi guys,
I got the answer form Faro regarding my issue and thought I will share with you.

' Thank you for contacting FARO customer support.
Please ensure that the project doesn't use large coordinate.
The following article will guide you on how to adjust the Survey Data Format of your project and then try to export again
https://knowledge.faro.com/Software/FAR ... a_in_SCENE '

I did use large coordinates (6 digits) since I had to locate the project in OSGB36 (UK national grid). I understand we I should truncate coordinates and then shift the project to proper location.
Welcome to XXI century :)

I don't think this is the cause.
I had this issue but never had big coordinated (or no external survey at all)

hmm, then maybe Faro doesn't know exactly and they advised me not to use big coordinates 'just in case'. I don't have time to check it now.
I checked Cloud Compare though and it couldn't manage my point cloud which consist of around 100 scan stations and depends on resolution and format occupies 15GB, which I think is still not extremely big point cloud. I had much bigger in the past.
I got Recap Pro luckily and divided it in some part there as Tommy suggested earlier.
