Good points. The tech sheets give no indication which units would be included in future enhancements. I can understand the mechanics/optics of the devices being very different but I find it difficult that the internal computing hardware and software are so different new features are limited to certain models.

Even the description for each of the three scanners are the same word for word except for the range and I double checked it before buying my S70, and now they have added

Rescanning of distant area in higher resolution

It is like taking you in a D tour, and at the end of the day you are buying an enhanced M70 rather than S70, I feel sheeted.

There is some irony in having an RTC360 Banner Ad directly below this thread....

As someone who relies on colourised scan data this "FARO Laser-HDR" update is of interest to me, particlulary as it claims to enhance the imagery of the X Series scanners.

From the sample imagery there is more detail, although sometimes the effect is slightly over the top for my liking. Areas that are slightly over or under exposed are much improved. Areas that are greatly over exposured appear grey which is better than nothing but probably still not that useable... it will be interesting to see how the colour balancing deals with these grey areas when creating a PPC.

I tested Laser-HDR on my recent project captured with TX5 and it works. It kind of blends intensity data with color and projects texture even on overexposed spots. It does look a bit arificial in spherical view, but L-HDR PPCL seems to be "sharper" and more saturated then original PPCL. I guess you can get similar result by exporting both b/w and colour overlays and blend them in Photoshop, but the nice thing is it's done automatcally. Well done!
And yes, there is the manipulator thing, it's all over the forum now! :DD

Is it possible to apply this to previous projects?

I'd like to go back and re-process scan projects that have been aligned/stitched already (to save restarting old projects) with the new L-HDR to see how much different the final cloud appears.

If it improves the colours a lot it will be great for videos!

Yes you can re-process all scans recorded with Focus Scanners!
Please make sure to un-tick the "Skip fully processed scans" check box and then select LHDR in the "Configure Processing" Step.

Here is an example of a re-processed scan from an X-Series scan:

In the indoor sample panorama's i can see some stitch errors in the middle of the pictures, is that only a visual error or is that visible in the scans themselfs as well?
Sincerely, Robin van der Molen

I am not sure why they made this difference if they already made it clear by making 2 separate units S70 and M70

FWIW, we were told the same thing when we recently purchased our S70. Was disappointed to learn that some of the firmware enhancements (and now Scene 2018 features) do not apply to the new S70. We were given the impression the only difference was range. Our very capable and helpful vendor has offered to look into the matter on our behalf with Faro corporate.
FARO apologizes for the error and reiterates that the S70 will receive the distance targetting firmware and updates will be ready as soon as our Product Management issues the fix.

Happy scanning! :)
