BLK360 in Scene

Post by geodezja3d_pl » Sun Oct 13, 2019 9:10 am

Hi,

Is it possible to register BLK360 scans in Scene (I've got latest 2019)? What about downloading scans?

Thanks,
Kuba

Jak sie masz Kuba

I’m going to answer because nobody else has

I have NOT done any exhaustive experimentation

But I did try a few times to mix in BLK scans with Faro scans

Here is what I experienced

Exported files from cyclone as pts and as e57

-first couple of times I tried it I found some kind of scaling issue with the BLK

Across 3m the BLK scans would be off 20mm

They were too small, for whatever reason

They seemed to register in a cluster ok with C2C with other BLK scans, (however the results were extremely poor compared to Register360 or Cyclone)

They would NOT register with the Faro scans. I could get statistically good results C2C but upon closer observation the registration was not even close to correct. I could NOT get scene to recognize either sphere or checkerboard targets even though they were obviously well scanned. No results for top view registration.

-the last time I tried was after the latest firmware update. This update seems to have mostly rectified the scaling issue and scans seem to be mostly reliable now. If you have one you know how it is; it scans pretty well until it doesn’t. Anyway the firmware update has made it more reliable. But still no luck making scene recognize targets or register the scans. C2C seemed a little better, but I was not confident in the results. It felt like a false registration.

I keep hoping for this to be a “thing” because I love the Leica hardware (I’d put my life in the oh so accurate and precise hands of the trusty AT-401) but think the software is horrendous and I was stung once when our CCP lapsed and I was frozen onto a non working version of cyclone. That particular event will not be happening again. But I digress.

I’m probably just an idiot doing it all wrong. I’m definitely an idiot. I might be doing it wrong.

I’m really hoping that anyone else who might have tried something different might pipe up here and offer some different suggestions.

Scene should be able to handle the e57 files although I must admit that I have had performance issues when importing e57 files. Registration takes a long time and although it worked for me a few weeks ago, I feel it needs some improvements.

Make your life easy and export the FARO scans and BLK scans as two separate point clouds to CloudCompare and you should be able to get the job done.

I am not a BLK user so not sure why there might be a scaling issue...in case you can figure it out, CloudCompare can also easily scale the point cloud back to its correct size.

Eugene

Dziekuje Felix, thanks Eugene.
I was wondering of buying blk in addition to my m70 but it looks like a bad idea.

mixing scans is always a hassle. i wouldn't do it and besides what can you do with a blk that cannot be done with your m70?

I would stay away from it given all the negative posts over it.

Hello!

Knowing some details of the implementation I can give the advice to pay attention to use structured scans, that is distance images. Otherwise, expect poor performance from Scene handling unstructured imported formats. That is something you can benchmark yourself easily.

Let's hope we find time to fix this, sooner than later.

Kind regards

Konstantin
