Import of large (50GB) e57 clouds in Scene

Post by sommer »

Hello everyone,

I am trying to import a project point cloud in e57 format into a an empty project. The cloud was created and exported via Scene. It worked with clouds of around 20GB but the 50GB one will always encounter "A fatal error" and Scene quits.
Anyone knows a solution or is there a limit on the software side? Computer should be able to handle it. Hardware and disk space is fine.
I'd like that to work because the VR experience of Scene is way better with a single point cloud instead of 90 (even with the ppc created...).

Thank you and best regards,

Steffen

I seldom import E57 in Scene, and never big datasets, but there might be some workarounds.
Would it be acceptable to split the E57 in 4 or 5 files?
As an alternative if you fuse the whole dataset in a single cloud you could also consider the possibility to space filter. The result should be much smaller.
Cloudcompare would be of help in this case.

It's hard to say why the error uccurs without knowning more about your setup and maybe even looking at the data.

I was wondering about your workflow, though.
If you create a PPC from any number of scans it actually becomes a single fused data set already.
Why are you taking the detour with the e57? In order to use the SCENE VR you would have to create a PPC from your single e57 import anyway.
So maybe I am missing something? Which Scene version are you using?

Hello,
thank you for the answers. I try this workflow because I found, that the VR in SCENE renders much faster if I don't have all the individual scans + the project point cloud in the project. I had a direct comparison between a 20 scans project and one with a e57 cloud imported from the 20 scans project. Scene is the most recent version.
