blown out edges

Post by ScottErnst »

I scanned a chair for someone who wants to model and reproduce it. As you can see from the screen shots below, the individual scans look pretty crisp, but once they are all registered together I'm getting edge spray all around it. When I scanned it I wondered how the scanner would handle the dark brown, low gloss finish. The individual scans seem to show that it wasn't a problem. I'm wondering if someone can diagnose what is happening here. The rest of the room is nicely registered and clean.

It looks like some mixed pixels - I am not sure what scanner you are using, but in Cyclone, there is a mixed pixel filter on importing. Probably scanning a little further away would reduce this too.

Here are those setting options in Register 360. I'd reimport the dataset and turn the filters to the max. Another one to check is your normal threshold. Basically Register 360 trys to filter out those noisy points during the import so they aren't included in the final dataset. Set Normal Threshold to 1 to to apply the most strict noise filter during import.

I'm using a BLK. It may be that I was just too close. The scans were taken from about 5' away.

I actually took photos too because I was curious. It was 81 photos and the model came out great.

It appears that these settings only work with the RTC and P series. I am scanning with a BLK. However, I checked and they were already set to the settings that you suggested. Thanks, though.

Are you using the Register 360 BLK edition? I have no idea if that one is any different or specific to the BLK, but just a thought.

No, I'm using the full Register 360. Not Cyclone. Your screen shots showed the settings specific to the RTC and P series and I was hoping that since I'm using the BLK that it would show options for that scanner too, but no luck.
