LFM to Recap Conversion

Post by jtayl71 » Wed Jun 06, 2018 5:00 pm

I have recently been given a large dataset from a client that was done using Z+F scanner for the purpose of bringing the data into AutoCAD for design. I am a FARO guy and have never used anything related to Z+F or LFM. I have downloaded the LFM Server free trial to see if I could export to anyway, but no avail. The client has .ZFS files, .ZFC files along with the .LFM/.LFD file formats. Is there a workflow where I can get these somehow into ReCap without having to purchase a software for a one time use? Thanks for the assistance!

You can call ZF USA support, They are very good. How big is your data set? I have ZF control maybe I could help you too.

Peyman,

Thank you for the response, my dataset is quite large, 700+ individual scan setups, over 800 GB. I will see about contacting ZF USA support. I am able to get the pre-registered scans into recap, but I can't seem to get the registered dataset there.

to make a recap project (rcp file) from zfs files you can import direct zfs dataset in a new recap file: import and skip registration.

Gabrio,

I tried just this and none of the scans were registered together. They had lost all of their coordinate data and seemed to just be the raw data taken from the scanner.

hum, what a strange. we register scan from a zf imager 5010 with laser control. we save the register matrix in the zfs file, then export zfs file and import in recap skipping registration. that’s all. well, i never used LFM. sorry for the wrong tip.

Sorry for the late reply, but I have not been on the laser scan forum in a while. There are three workflows for converting an LFM dataset to ReCap; unfortunately, they both involve having to get a license from AVEVA LFM or subcontract a service organization to do it for you.

1) Within the LFM Gateway Register (version 4.4.2.12 or later) you now have the ability to write the transformations headers back into the .zfs files, which can then be opened and processed through ReCap following the procedure referenced earlier.

2) Within LFM Server you can save a specific volume of points comprised from all the scans, which can be focused on a specific area of interest and at a defined resolution. This volume then can be exported out into a .rcs formated file, which can then be opened in ReCap.

3) Within LFM Gateway you can export each ZFC file to the neutral file format .e57 then the e57 files can be brought into ReCap.

If the dataset was registered was registered within LFM then all three workflows will provide the laser scan data in the correct registered coordinate frame.

I hope this helps.
