Problem with Pointools PODcreator from Faro FLS files

Post by SAttaya »

Running Ver 2.00.01.00 (Build 2.0121219).
Want to convert FLS (from Scene 5.5.0.44203) to POD.
It fails.

I have both the 32-bit and the 64 bit FARO SDKs installed (from Programs and Features):
* FARO LS 1.1.505.0
* FARO LS 1.1.505.0 (64bit) (was installed when I installed SCENE 5.5.0.44203 x64)

The FLS that came out of SCENE can be read by SCENE (Quick View, Planar View and 3D view).
The options in Pointools PODcreator are:
* combine scans into a single cloud - checked
* Geometry units: m (meters)
* compression: maintain at least 1mm accuracy
* automatic compression - not checked
* univform Filter
- enable not checked
- sacing 0.010
* import RGB not checked (scan does not have color)
* import intensity - checked
* auto scale intensities - not checked
* generate Normals - not checked
* export options: POD per file
source and export file name are in "C:\temp" so it's not a filename too long problem

FLS's are smaller. (I think I saw 2.81/fls .vs. 13.2/pod)
I need to deliver PODs to client.
They get copied over the network, so size is material to time to xfer.

I'm not too familiar with PODcreator so I'll leave that issue for someone else to comment on, but you can export to POD directly from Scene. This should get you the deliverable you need.

I guess I didn't make it clear that the issue is
the transfer time of the files over the network.

It takes over 4.6x as long to transfer the PODs as 1x for the FLSs,
because the PODs are > 4.6x the size of the FLSs.

(The last time it was 8.1GB .vs. 1.7GB.)

Updated Note:
I just found a newer version on the Bentley site of POD creator (Pointools was identical).
I downloaded it ( ptpod02000102en.exe and
it created Setup_BentleyPointoolsPODcreator-2.0130618-en.exe)
and the 2nd failed to install when I was running as administrator.

(Since it failed installing the C++ redistributable and the new version was
available under the windows "start button" > All programs> ...
I ran it and it also failed. About reported - Version 01.00.01.02, build 2.0130618.

The idea is to transfer the much smaller FLS files (22% of POD files)
that come out of Scene and have the person on the other end,
run PODcreator to get POD files.

Update #2:
The Batch Conversion Error dialog (can only OK) says:
Conversion of
filename.fls failed,
no points found.

What about having scene LT on the other side to do the conversion?
If I remember correctly export works on LT.

I'm trying to keep it simple for the people at the other end.
Since they have Pointools, they will not find the PODcreator strange/different.
If I were to go to the SCENE LT route, everytime we upgrade Scene,
they'd have to upgrade Scene LT.
(Otherwise they just run the SDK installer, that's not much.)

Since Pointools PODcreator has .FLS as an input type, I figured they'd be able to read it and write/create POD file(s). I also figured they'd like to have the bug reported. (scans were from faro 3ds 120, 1/4 @ 4x)

I'm kinda hoping Dan or Faraz sees and replies to this (or one of the other Bentley software developer types - sales folks need not.)

Thanks

We have experienced issues applying this version of the SDK to Bentley Pointools and the PODCreator. We would recommend that you apply the previous version from July 2015 (Faro.LS.1.1.504.10) until an update can be provided.

Since SCENE is not backwards compatible between major version (5.4.x.y to 5.5.x.y),
I would have to start over with the raw scans.

So that is not a option.

I'll just keep transferring the larger POD files instead of the smaller .FLS files.

I wonder how the people using Bentley Pointools are handling the issue.

We now have a solution to updating Bentley Pointools and the Bentley Pointools PODCreator to make it compatible with the latest version of Faro Scene. Please see the link below to a technical document on the Bentley Communities website:
