Scan to CAD Tools and workflow

Post by Mortum »

I might have lived under a rock or something..
While my other topic is focussed on recommendations for me, I made this discussion so it can be more open, and for others to learn as well :)

But i have a question:
A customer of us showed us CAD data they recieved from a competitor, and honestly: it looked great!
(if our competitor is reading this: Shhh! you have a fan   )
(It was a steel processing plant, with alot of piping, walkways and assymetrical machinery, unfortunately i can't share it due to an NDA)

The most amazing part is that according the customer , it only took them a max. of 3 days to create.
(I'd guess the same model would take me atleast 2 weeks to create manually)

How can one automate the scan to CAD translation to a level, so that we can achieve the same speed?
("Upgrade" is an easy answer, I want to ask what software and workflow would make this possible :) )

My workflow currently (registering):

Scene 4.8 and Geomagic Design X

Load data from scanner.
Import to Scene
(per scan)
Apply filters
Apply Dark point filters (i found a setting which grabs nearly all stray with it)
Find objects -> Spheres
(times the amount of scans, this is the largest timesink since i can't work in batches)

(in main workspace)
Add scan manager
[and wait till its done alligning]

Save

Open Geomagic

Import Scene workspace

Sample down to 400M points total (30 mins, My PC works way faster below this number of points, and we havent encountered we needed more data)

Finetune allignment with a "global and fine" allignment with 30% data check, 8 itterations and deviation on auto.
[watch the magic happen]

Mesh (optional required for automatic recognition of shapes)

Regions (optional)

Ready for processing to CAD.

In the pointcloud then i make a bunch of planes to trace the objects i need, and extrude them to a solid.
Very view times the automated recognision guesses a shape correctly, so i tend to leave that function alone most of the time.
Sincerely, Robin van der Molen

Take a look at Edgewise ClearEdge 3D (https://www.clearedge3d.com/) or Pointsense (https://www.faro.com/en-gb/products/con ... -as-built/). Both are able to extract pipes, steel and walls automatically. If you are looking for a more economical option for pipes, round ducts and conduits, look at https://scantobim.xyz.

Full disclosure, I am the CTO of Scan To BIM Revit add-in.

Thanks! I'm going to check those out :)

Most of the times we scan heavy machinery, and Geomagic design fails to recognise even the most simple geometrie.

No problem! unlike my other topic this is more an open discussion for everyone interested, I noticed it is really hard for an new party to gather information on how to get into 3D scanning, with this topic i hope to bring some clearity and also learn a thing or 2 myself :D

So every form of input is appreciated from everyone!
Sincerely, Robin van der Molen
