Hello all,
first off: this is a great forum. I've only worked with laser scanning infrequently and I'm impressed with the level of knowledge here. I'm a mechanical engineer working for the City of Edmonton and we've been using laser scanning more and more on our projects.
I've got a lot of questions and was wondering if there are any stickies, or if someone can share any posts describing the basics of file types and software. Also, am I blind or is there no search? I've been using google (site:laserscanningforum.com) to search posts.
Ultimately I'm trying to develop a high level engineering standard for our consultants to use for laser scanning projects. Any suggestions on the best forum to post a question like that?

For software you can just check out the manufacturers:
https://laserscanningforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=75
The most used open file types are E57 and LAS/LAZ.
But most software packages have their own point cloud format, and are able to read one or another of the "not so standard" formats.
There are laser scanner manufacturers with open SDKs, so everybody can develop something to load their point clouds, others only allow point cloud exports from another software suite from their portfolio.

Thanks! I always see people replying "use the search", this is the first time I've had to ask how to use it.

Hi Travis, and welcome to the post, this is my go to post if I have any questions with laser scanning.
