Hi from Yorkshire

Hi Everyone,

Thought join the forum to ask some 'pressing' questions!
I'm a Senior CAD Tech with over 12 years experience and I've recently started using laser scanning as part of my site investigation process. We currently use the Leica BLK360 for ease of use with Recap Pro.

First question...what's the next step up without the need of buying dedicated registration software other than Recap? We are looking at the Faro X130 and the Leica RTC360.

And hello from the West Midlands! (Technically I am a northerner too according to various maps).

For both Faro and Leica you will need to buy additional "proprietary" software, as I understand.

I work for Leica Geosystems and for the RTC360 you will need to use Cyclone REGISTER 360 as a minimum. This provides up to 5 licenses of Cyclone FIELD 360 so you can (optionally) register in the field to help smooth out your down-stream process. You would also get to use your BLK360 with Cyclone FIELD 360... this is a new feature we have added in the last release.

If you'd like a demonstration of anything, let me know and I will put the right UK person in touch with you.

i would definately advice to buy a scanner with it's own software. recap just doesn't do it for large projects.
recap is good for viewing and use with autodesk products.

Hey, welcome to the forum.

You can import Faro raw scan data into ReCap and register it in there.
As Paul pointed out, this is not possible with the RTC from Leica.

Depending on your project sizes Lieven is correct as well.
The big plus for the Faro scanners is you can choose the Registration software more freely (and don't need to use Faro Scene), since they have an open SDK to import their raw scans.

In the end it comes down to what fits you best (scanner + software).

If you would scan with a faro and spheres pointcab is indeed a good solution. Works like a charm!
