Gexcel Heron Tests

Post by 3DForensics »

Hello All,

Last week I was fortunate to be able to try the Gexcel Heron backpack system and was pleasantly surprised at how simple this was to use. However, I have a dilemma... after years of looking at terrestrial laser scanner data and always wanting more accuracy, I have a hard time accepting less accuracy from SLAM based devices. Having said that, this system makes me want to love it. There are some clear advantages to using this type of system. First off, that whole scan took me 7.5 minutes, I had more coverage and the Reconstructor and Heron software pretty much filtered out moving people and cars!

I would like to ask many of you to have a look at the video below and let me know if this type of data is acceptable for crash investigations, security or anything else you might think of. If you are interested in the data, I have made it available on my website.

Here is another outpost of the Heron system which shows the overview map and trajectory with 360 video. This is just a click of a button once all the data is processed.

I don’t know about latest GeoSLAM product but it seems a little better in my opinion. Also, I was quite impressed with the outdoor range.

I tested a REVO a couple years back and the range was rather limited, especially on a sunny day. The scans from the Heron were on a very hot and sunny day and you can see it filled in everything quite well.
