I voted for Reg process on this.

The first three problems can largely be solved by simply throwing money at hardware or selecting a major vendor sharing or transmission platform.

The last one is much more of a challenge to solve at scale with speed and accuracy. It requires significant expertise and talented diligent personnel that is much harder to find on short notice.

Indeed. No matter how hard all suppliers want you to believe.... registration isn't a simple push button thing. It takes a few years and different situations to fully know how this works and how the used software reacts to different scenarios.

For me it's no pain as i'm a solo guy but i would believe it is bloody hard to train all staff with the same kind of philosophy in mind.

I think you said it best. Vendors having little to no actual hands-on experience selling a product and workflow, is mostly the reason we have these issues I think. They sell the moon to someone thinking because the field side is quick that the office end is quick and easy, and when the wheels fall off the wagon, the vendors already have the next new shiny thing to sell.

Agreed entirely, precise measurement and creation of a quality product demands expertise and experience, the equipment relies on this regardless of what the manufacturers tell you. That said, good equipment is also part of the equation. Saw some scanned topography done on an iPhone recently which was wrong in so many ways yet still could look like a pretty scan to the untrained eye. The problem is educating the client to know the difference.

To the opening question, the main issue I see with point clouds is being able to demonstrate their accuracy and prove their fitness for purpose.

Throwing money at something is not always the best a solution i think...

QC is hard, and finding people to do it properly it is harder. but a full time QC-er can handle lot of projects. if the base registration cleaning, etc is done by other personelles.

Most of our time is taken by reflection/noise cleaning. you just simply cannot do it faster properly. For us it is a must, because it affects the accuracy of the C2C registrations a lot in register 360. As a sideeffect the result clouds looks/works better down the line.

Other issue is that the modeling apps, cannot handle efficiently large clouds, so no matter what res you scan usually your client cannot have that resolution.

#1: Dodgy marketing (mostly for hardware)
#2: Unrealistic claims about the achieved quality / accuracy of registrations (software) and single points (hardware)

The second point is of course highly correlated to the first one. However, the biggest issue imo is that numbers from the land of fairy tales are quite often passed on from manufacturer / vendor to an end user to a client (without further explanations)... who may question the technology as such if the data does not hold what it is supposed to...and that's not good for the entire industry.

Sad greetings

In my opinion operability is a huge point.
If I am using two scanners from different manufacturers, then I need normally two different software packages, export the scanner files to E57 (so additional time + file size), go into software 3 to do the Registration, go into software 4 to do some more processing, go into sofware 5 (here CAD or BIM or GIS).

When I read of all the people who export las+e57+RCP for every project I am woundering how much space their projects take. Are they using another 20 TB disk every year?
