New 3D Scanner for an Underground Salt Mine

Post by Sean Vader »

Hey all,

I am looking to purchase a new 3D scanner and software for the mine I am working at. I am new to the 3D scanning world and have been doing some research to find one that would best suit our needs.

The largest areas that will need to be scanned are 70ft x 70ft in height and width, and could extend for several hundred feet in either direction.
The main use will be to compare multiple scans of one area to identify the amount of convergence over a certain period of time. We will also use the scanner to monitor the advancing face and to measure and monitor conveyor/mill structure.

Some of the requirements that I have identified are:

Range 100 to 200 Meters.
Accuracy of 4mm at 20 Meters.
Speed of processing and scanning are important.
Dust may also be an issue for some areas.
Durability would also be something to consider.
Price is also something to consider although I have no been provided a budget at this point in time.

From reading some of the threads on this forum I have identified the Leica RTC360 and the Faro Focus 350 or 150 as some of the possible candidates.
For software it appears that Leica has the best software options.

Any recommendations for scanner/software combinations would be appreciated.

The FARO Focus 350 is awesome! Highly recommended for your application.

I would go at a riegl or P series only.

In my experience, FARO's don't perform too well in dusty environments. I would also recommend Riegl or Leica.

Z+F 5016 A would be a good choice too.

I would go for a total station scanner hybrid...especially if you are talking about monitoring.
All other scanners are much faster but will not be as useful when talking about monitoring. Look into a SX12 imho.

The ZEB Horizon is a popular tool for rapid and frequent convergence monitoring.

For the analysis, you could use Cloud Compare or a mining-specific application like Point Studio or Micromine.

Here's a salt mine example scanned and processed in minutes with the Horizon - https://geoslam-salt-mine.web.app/
