Come on guys, we have all been faced with this daunting question.
Either trying to sell a used instrument, or wondering how much to offer for one, or if it's even worth considering it and just buying new.

Personally I am between 40 and 50%, but that takes a few things into consideration, I know just how punishing some projects can be, but also that the equipment can then sit on a shelf for months doing nothing.

Only 10 answers from 200+ views tells me you are all curious, but holding back from sharing...

I suspect everyone is reading and thinking like me, it's not a question that you can easily answer? Yes you can take age, usage and condition into account but the market is changing so quickly that value changes on a daily basis? Narrow your question and you may get some answers? Perhaps you restrict it to a particular model, make or spec?

Agreed with other commenters that it's a bit hard to assess, but one of the first things I'd look for is manufacturer support and continued development on that specific device. That would swing the value for me considerably.

I kept it as general as possible exactly because of not wanting to make a shouting match about brands.

Clarifying:
  • 3 year old should keep it within the support timeframe, or even if it's end of life, it has had all the bugs squashed and worked out by then, without being ancient uncompetitive technology
  • Good condition, well that one is subjective, I would say no more than mm2 of scratches over the whole body, absolutely none on the screen.
  • Serviced, all parts that needed replacing have been replaced, others that needed servicing have been serviced.
  • Calibrated. A scanner that has not been calibrated has not been serviced, and it needs to be calibrated to be used IMHO, without it it's an expensive paperweight.

60% value retention.
I did not expect such a high number to be honest, but you have spoken.

Thanks for taking part in this experience!
