Most important features for 3D laser scanner (as-built surveys)

Post by andy386 »

Hi all,

I'm writing a financial report on as-built BIM scans. I know 3D Forensics did this survey back in 2016 and I thought it might be useful for everyone to see the new results since the release of the new products.

Everyone gets 5 votes, survey will be open for 3 weeks. I know accuracy claims are all over the place so feel free to comment on that or anything else that I missed.

Thank you everyone in advance for participating.

Great survey. I am surprised though, that size and portability ranks way higher than software. I would have thought accuracy and software to be the two highest. Makes me wonder if more field than office people are voting. Maybe that could have been a question. Are you field, office or both?

Maybe not too many P40 and Cyclone users voting yet! Would rather lug it about knowing the quality of data and what the software can do when i get back to the desk.

I'd like to see a question about what the data is typically used for:
(range for surveyors vs inside facility, etc)
* survey
* facility (inside)
* facility (outside)
* forensics
* general
* ???

and maybe experience level and if office or field ?s

A bit off-topic...
Accuracy is #2 in this equipment survey, just trailing 'speed'. It's good to know that accuracy is valued.
The USA, Liberia, and Myanmar are the last three hold-outs for adopting the Metric system -it would certainly be nice if we all used the same measurement system worldwide.

Has anyone scanned the roof of the Paris Observatory, where it all began (photo below)? It's graphically interesting (to me at least) with the stone 'Meridian pyramid' lined up with the observatory structure beyond -not to mention the North and South Poles. I'd love to do it... ~S

How France Created the Metric System
It is one of the most important developments in human history, affecting everything from engineering to international trade to political systems.
http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/2018092 ... ric-system
"The line of longitude running from the pole to the equator that would be used to determine the length of the new standard was the Paris meridian. This line bisects the centre of the Paris Observatory building in the 14th arrondissement, and is marked by a brass strip laid into the white marble floor of its high-ceilinged Meridian Room, or Cassini Room.
Although the Paris Observatory is not currently open to the public, you can trace the meridian line through the city by looking out for small bronze disks on the ground with the word ARAGO on them, installed by Dutch artist Jan Dibbets in 1994 as a memorial to the French astronomer François Arago. This is the line that two astronomers set out from Paris to measure in 1792. Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre travelled north to Dunkirk while Pierre Méchain travelled south to Barcelona."
