Preferred point cloud formats

Post by smacl » Mon Oct 08, 2018 11:26 am

I've been doing some work with the OpenLSEF recently looking at standards for point cloud extraction and have put together an article covering my thoughts on it in this months Civil Engineering Surveyor. Following on from this I'm interested to know what are peoples preferred formats for sharing and archiving data, and whether people prefer published open formats or are happier with vendor specific formats.

I would suggest that sharing and archiving are potentially 2 different activities, with different formats used for both?

for example, we are likely to provide point clouds externally to clients in RCS/RCP, but would usually generate PTS/E57 to get there - and would archive the original data in the .IMP format.

I agree, was dithering whether to create two polls, and went for the simple and lazy option :) My feeling is that native formats will give you more efficient workflows until you need to share data but they fall down badly for exchange between different packages from different vendors. That said, LAZ is getting used for big national mapping sets, and E57 seems like the currently strongest format for storing and exchanging data that includes instrument setups, images and other metadata.

We also almost never use the same formats for delivery and storage. Most of our clients want RCS/RCP or POD files to use. We store all of these, but store the FLS and the original Scene project as our backup files. We don't delete much of anything, too much time could be lost in re-creating a project if I need to go back to it.
Storage space is cheap in comparison

e57 is probably the most used between all the various softwares but storing .imp is number one for archiving then the delivered file format (pods, rcp, ptx, e57)
