Field Tested Target Spheres for Sale...

Post by flemster911 »

I'm a newbie here, so here it goes...
I've been making target spheres (100mm, 150mm, 200mm) for local firms in the central Florida area for the past year.
I'm curious to see if anyone else would be interested in purchasing these low cost, reliable, shatterproof spheres.
Each size has been field tested with great results - green lights in Scene and green circles in Recap.
So far, I've made over 100 spheres of various sizes with no problems (the 200mm sphere is pictured below).

The spheres are made of:
- Shatterproof, UV resistant, matte white, durable plastic.
- PVC stand
- Chrome plated, strong-pull magnetic base
- Bolted construction for easy maintenance

Hi Glenn,

The photos is rather small, but is there a coating on these or are they made of some shatter-proof material?

Thanks for sharing.

Eugene

Hello Eugene,
The spheres are made of shatterproof, UV resistant, matte white, durable plastic.
I use them nearly every week and have dropped them from a height of 2 meters with no breakage, yet.
My supplier says they are NOT unbreakable, just shatterproof - but I have yet to break or even crack one.

Hi Eugene,

it think shooter proof with durable plastic will be hard to achive. We have done many test last year with a much better material and it is hard to absurb the impact from the hit. And if you have a kind of holder or magnet on it, this make it much worst. In case of droping down, the sphere will fall every time on the same area in case of the weight. Same times a magnet or a holder works like a extension and push mush more crash power in the sphere.
Depend also form the ground, greenfield are easy, but concrete surface are hard.

regards.. ..Eric

Just to be clear...
I made these spheres, more as a test project, to:
1. see if they would work,
2. find an alternative to risking $175 spheres out in the industrial environment.
After much field testing, and a few modifications later, this is what I came up with.

I have NEVER had ANY problem with them registering in Scene or Recap, or breaking out in the field.
And, of the 100 or so that I've made, none have been returned for any reason - dissatisfaction or breakage.

I'm a 3D engineering designer who scans frequently and I just wanted to find an affordable option for reference spheres that would work, both in the field and within my budget.

Has anyone tried using spheres like: https://www.google.com/#q=foam+sphere+18+inch&tbm=shop

I'm interested in seeing if it would work or what would be needed to make it work.
