Nice piece of kit but shame it is not TR4 socketed. Was planning one picking one up as a drop in upgrade to the current rig but not really worth the cost or effort for the foreseeable future. Poor old Intel must be well rattled as their grip on the HEDT market has been shattered.

Re: Owch... RENDER TIME IRRELEVANT!
It is a brutal piece of kit. I just don't think it will be much more than a halo product on the real world.
Pardon the very simplistic calculations.
For content creation, it is just a bit too expensive on a cost per GHz, assuming it boosts 100% of the time on all cores, which it probably can't:
Threadripper 3990x - 64 cores @ 4.3 = 275.2 GHz @ 3990 USD = 14.5 USD per GHz
Ryzen 9 3950 - 16 cores @ 4.7 = 75.2 GHz @ 749 USD = 10 USD per GHz
Rendering is the one thing that scales amazingly well in render farms, where typically throwing a few more modes is not much of the issue. The biggest issue is heat management, and one of the ways that is being handled currently is off-site installations, building the farm somewhere with cheap land, versus expensive cooling.
That said, it is extremely exciting what this means for the next generation of processors where I expect this performance to be sub-1200 USD, and at that pp, it's a bargain!

For the real bargains, look at some of the older threadrippersMajorDomo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:45 am It is a brutal piece of kit. I just don't think it will be much more than a halo product on the real world.

Threadripper 1920x, 12 cores @ 4.0ghz = 48ghz @ USD199 = 4.1 USD per ghz.
Realistically, if you're going to do these sums you also need to calculate the cost of the total system as faster systems need faster more expensive memory to deliver that speed and also newer threadrippers have much more expensive motherboards. I'm very much of the opinion that for maximum productivity, where there is a potential for processing bottlenecks, the more cost effective solution is to have multiple headless workstations accessible by remote desktop with reasonably fast shared storage. You need to do a bit of critical path analysis on your workflows, but there's no reason you couldn't have enough redundant computing available in office to keep most people fully productive most of the time.

If only all of our software could use all of the core all the time and not only some time.
