Hi,
Here's a small gift. This is how I build my own inexpensive spheres (less than 10€):

They are very accurate and you don't cry when they fall down.
Use MTN94 matt white: the best and the cheapest.
I usually combine them with the official 145mm spheres I bought on the Laserscanning shop. These surveyors spheres have a perfect centering of the magnet which allows the use with prisms or stickers.

Re: Build your own spheres
How solid are these spheres? We use styrofoam, but after a couple of drops they end up looking more cube like than spherical. Are they a few mm thick? Or like egg shells?

Re: Build your own spheres
Hi,
The material is acrylic. They are quite thick, but they can easily break if they fall down.
But as the sphere costs less than 3€, it doesn't really matter.
I built about 10 spheres and only broke 2. I could re-use the magnet and the washer.
These spheres are accurate and I get very good results in Scene.

We also make our own sphere's with:
http://www.bastelonlineshop.de/kunststo ... -2600.html
From simple ABS plastic we turn a adapter on the lathe and attach a magnet on the bottom.
Works very well and is about €6 per sphere
