Custom checkerboard targets

Post by jaredmatthews » Sun Jun 11, 2017 9:16 pm

I am looking for some ideas or advice that others may have already tried.

I have the checkerboard template which can be printed out, but there are a few issues using paper targets:

paper bends/tears
applying targets to surfaces takes extra time on site
paper is not water proof

I have moved away from using spheres and targets for regular scanning, but every now and again we get a project where we have to put the scans to GPS coordinates.

I am looking for a better way of using targets. I have an idea of getting some targets printed either onto a perspex-like material, or thin sheet metal.

This way the targets can be used over and over and over. I am not concerned with numbering the targets, however, I am concerned about the ability of the targets to be scanned.

Has anyone had any experiments with scanning different target materials and found out which one is best.

I know that there are targets available to buy off the internet from suppliers, but I cant justify paying £300 for something I can make myself.

As we do a lot of our scanning in processing plants with lots of metal surfaces I have had plastic checker board targets made up with a magnetic backing They sticks well to steel columns. They were fairly inexpensive and quick to put up and take down

We've successfully used these in various locations, they seem to be pretty robust and are reasonably priced. ... s-as-a-set

I have had plastic and aluminum targets printed at a FedEx store that I designed using the inexpensive targetmill software.

I like the plastic better as close up the aluminum ones reflect too much laser light.

I also bought letter size and tabloid size peel and stick bond label material and printed my own on my laser printer and the targetmill software to have consecutive and automatic numbering printed. Permanent labels don't come off and withstand some rain. Be careful where you stick them though. They can leave a mess. They also come in less than permanent peel and stick backing. Google it.
Goid luck.
