Post by Phil Marsh »

Does anyone know of a website featuring famous landmarks which have been scanned recently? I know Plowman Craven scan in some interesting places. Ive also heard that goverment grants can be available for certain projects, is this true?

I am aware that a significant number of important sites have been done one way or another, I would be surprised if anyone will pass this info on for free. There are a number of restrictions (commercially sensitive etc).
I think it would be a good idea to have a national archive of scan data but it will not happen for a long time. Those who hold the data will always try and get as much money out of them as possible. In addition to the commercial side there are the downsides. Who captured the data, what resoulutions, how accuarte, was control used, does it sit on OS etc.
Each structure that has been scanned will have been scanned with a different end product in mind, visualisations through to engineering tasks.

I think the best we could hope for is for all scanner teams to publish a list of sites they have scanned with caviats attached, this is still a bit pie in the sky at the moment. Companies and non comercial organisations would have to hold their client confidentiality above all else.

If you are after a specific location I may be able to assist.

Hi Andy,

I understand about that companies will have client confidentiality and sensitive restrictions on its projects becuase I myself have been involved in quoting for projects that I cannot discuss but I meant websites like this http://www.stonehengelaserscan.org.

Also I did hear on the grape vine about a heritage laser scan grant but I cannot remember where and from who.

With regards to the heritage foundation, do you mean the Cyrark foundation. They are involved in a lot of interesting projects.

http://archive.cyark.org

there is always the possibility of teaming up with the right university, they have the ability to provide person power if you can supply the kit and structured training, it becomes a win win allowing to assist with heritage work. Once you are on the ladder it makes things so much easier.

Greetings,

I don't know if this counts but we scanned Union Street Station in Tornoto last year and our data clearly picks up the CN Tower.

When you scanned the station did you spend some extra time picking up the tower and fully testing the usefulness range of your scanner. I surveyed the John Lewis building in Liverpool and captured some data on the city of Liverpool tower some distance in the background.

Phil,

We didn't get to test the data for teh CN Tower par se, but using the reigl LMS420 did seem to capture a beig area of detail. Mind you the range is in the name....420 means 420 metres.
However, with the dataset coloured with photographs it does make it look rather good.

Sorry, for no examples at the moment but the data is archived away at present and I'm unble to take the time to extract some images

Riegl is good for range, we have used it over exessive distances with varying results. Limitations are based on the angular accuracy of the instrument being used. You are going to have a greater point spacing at distance even at the highest resolutions. Even though the reigl is quick to capture the noise range can be huge compared to other systems, playing with the settings will give far better results but slow the capture down.
