BBC Documentary on South Georgia Whaling, featuring scanning

Post by dan_mccurdy »

Hi everyone,

For our UK friends (or other folk using a VPN or something like CyberGhost), the BBC have just played a documentary that we were part of, chronicling the whaling that took place at South Georgia Island. It features a small glimpse of our recent laser scanning of Leith Harbour whaling station (approximately 3000 scans), which took us about a month to scan using a C10 and a Focus 120. The clips of the laser scan data (near the end of the doco) were produced using Pointools, over about three days (including trying to figure out the software and rendering it in 1080p). It struggled with the data size (120GB POD file), but it got through it with a few crashes here and there.

Here's the link to the video online :

I will post more video and images of the site soon now that the documentary has aired - didn't want to steal their thunder.
