BETA of HTML 5 interface

Post by ddustin »

I thought I would tease all of you Faro users out there with some tidbits on the X-series BETA firmware with HTML 5 enabled. It may not even be a BETA from the standpoint of the Scanner functionality, but it is when it comes to the HTML 5 access.

What HTML 5 means is you can access the scanners from any hand held device.
In short it works very well.

There are a few hiccups that I expect the Engineers at Faro to address in the near future.

I have tested it on:
1. An iPad Air
2. iPhone 4S
3. iPhone 6+

The response is very fluid.. the only drawback is the iPhone 6+ buttons don't work (yet) in landscape mode and I couldn't find where to create a new project.

A huge word of caution... IF you get your hands on the Firmware update, DO NOT install it on the older LS scanners as it won't work. The instructions are clear that it should not be used on the 120..
I am confident (hopeful, pleading) Faro will release a version for the LS once they get the bugs worked out of the X130 and X330 version. It only makes sense to work on the X series first as they are the current versions.

I second the motion for the firmware updates on the 120s. There is a very large customer base who have been waiting for this a very long time. I hope we don't get abandoned!

If you do happen to update on the X series, here is how you can access:

Not sure about TX5. I did just update and there was no problems at all. The html 5 interface is very fast and fluid. I have tried in both Samsung Galaxy Tab 7, iPhone 5s and my laptop.

It is basically the same but looks quite good.

Some initial findings;
Tested on the following hardware so far - iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6 plus, iPad 3 Retina, iPad Air (newest), iPad mini (first gen), Dell Venue8 Pro (Windows 8 Pro Tablet), MotoX (Android), Galaxy Note4 , Galaxy Tab 7 (Android).

All three platforms - iOS, Android, Windows 8 tablet, work with the new firmware on one of my Focus 120 scanners. On the iOS browser-either Safari or Chrome, when changing Profiles, it changes the resolution and Quality sliders resulting in the correct profile, however it shows as an 'Altered' version of the profile the scanner was last set to. With Windows 8 or Android, it correctly switches to one of the built-in preset Profiles.
As Eugene mentioned, you cannot yet (hopefully soon implemented!) add or delete Projects or adjust any General Settings. Also, you cannot adjust the Horizontal and Vertical area of an existing scan.
So far though it is looking really good. So nice to be able to start using non-Flash devices!

This is a GREAT step forward for our use. I have noticed you can't really 'manage' projects because you can't add a project.....but that could be done at the scanner for us.

I also really like the interface for scan resolution....we have used Androids and when you have a slow connection you can easily over-shoot adjusting the scan resolution.....it takes some practice to know how long to hold that button down!!! This uses selection boxes.....TERRIFIC idea.

The stopper for us right now is that we can not access the sensors. We put scanners up high and need to then level them....can't get there on this beta version.

This IS beta, so we need to all remember that.....its a GREAT start. Thank you to the developers for getting this out....a little more user interface and it will be what we use.
