Combining scans from different manufacturers

Post by Augusto 3D »

Any caveats when combining terrestrial scans from two different manufacturers? We have a Faro S series and an X7. The seems to have similar accuracy (2mm).
we have a larger job coming up and want to split the scanning to save time on the field.

When i combine riegl with tx5 (faro) i just scan some spheres with the Riegl, extract the center coordinates from Riscan and import that in Faro Scene.

I'll export both datasets and import them in Pointcab for 1 nice combined dataset.

I'm sure the X7 software knows how to calculate the center of a sphere as well.

interested to learn more about your workflow. So you bring the sphere centers as control points into Scene ? I mean you should be scanning the same speheres with both scanners no?

PointCab is nice, I wish they had some better extraction tools because in terms of rasterizing scans, nothing beats it.

Intensity returns from different instruments can be very different. Ranges vary and can be linear or logarithmic. Can make drawing using Intensity on the combined mode a bit of a pain.

We've recently done a job that combined data from a Faro S150, NAvVis VLX, Emesent Hovermap and DJI M300/P1.

All went together without a problem as our survey control was good.
