Any way to mesh a point cloud at high resolution?
I'm meshing some tree scans and I would like to get a high resolution model out of them but the same problematic "feature" of scene remains, decimating those meshes horribly (it always gives me low poly models no matter what settings I choose) and there is no way around it.
What kind of workflow and app could I use to get a decent mesh out of those tree point clouds?
So far I've only tried MeshLab, but it has a hard time defining proper normals for the points, so the resulting mesh doesn't look like a tree.
Any ideas?

What's your goal for the mesh? What's the end result or purpose of the HD mesh of a tree? Maybe there's a better "thing" to do to accomplish what you are ultimately after. Tell us more please. Love to help...

Dennis
I suggest that you check the DB of LSF with some searches to see what others have accomplished to see if the information on work flows will help you solve your problem.
Here are some projects that I have done several years ago:

The end result is to calculate volume. So it would be ideal to get "watertight" meshes as a result. Textures/colors are of no interest at this point.

It is hard to judge from a single view, but it looks like a fine detail from that distance.
What kind of point cloud meshing application was used for this?

Bentley Context Capture would give you good resultsdennik wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 3:38 pm I'm meshing some tree scans and I would like to get a high resolution model out of them but the same problematic "feature" of scene remains, decimating those meshes horribly (it always gives me low poly models no matter what settings I choose) and there is no way around it.

Re: Any way to mesh a point cloud at high resolution?
Which version of SCENE are you using and where are you located? I can put you in touch with one of our engineers that can at least confirm best practices. FARO did add some new functions for meshing in SCENE 2019. Otherwise we are seeing a number of folks taking interest in the new Scan2FX apps available in our app store. This takes the meshing to another level of quality. Might be worth investigating.

I'm using one of the latest 2019 scene versions. Yes I've been talking with someone from Scan2FX to see if I try a demo of their app.scott.diaz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 5:52 pm Which version of SCENE are you using and where are you located? Re: Any way to mesh a point cloud at high resolution?
dennik,
I recently achieved something like this using Scene -> CloudCompare -> MeshLab.
I used CloudCompare for merging pointclouds, computing normals, and Poisson Surface Reconstruction.
You may have to play with the options and sliders to nail the right level-of-detail for your model.
I used MeshLab to reduce and refine the mesh.
Hope that helps.
