FARO S150 Leveling
How does everyone deal with the levelness (or should I say unlevelness) of point cloud data from the FARO units. My intent is to not bash the S150 it's a quality scanner but the tilted point clouds annoy me. Typically these are unnoticeable unless looking at a facade or a long range distance. This is most noticeable along the facade of a building.
If we need any type of As-Built we use targets to position the point cloud properly onto known points. Looking for any little tips etc to ensure leveled data on a complete assumed datum.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Do you have any screenshots illustrating this issue?Slewis33 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:31 pm How does everyone deal with the levelness (or should I say unlevelness) of point cloud data from the FARO units. Re: FARO S150 Leveling
For almost any purpose, and especially on smaller projects - faro data is basically as level as leica (which has a cray good leveling system).
Either the facade tilts like this in reality, or there is some kind of other error, or setting issue.

Re: FARO S150 Leveling
I'm a land surveyor. I've georeferenced my scans from my 5 yr old FARO X330 on small and large jobs and find it amazing accurately level.
Are you checking the digital inclinometer before you scan? I'm assuming that your S150 has one.
My new FARO S350 is even better.

Re: FARO S150 Leveling
Do you have any issues with the registration or is it just a separate scan?Slewis33 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:31 pm How does everyone deal with the levelness (or should I say unlevelness) of point cloud data from the FARO units. This tilt can happen if you move the scanner before it finishes measurement (signaled with the "ding! dong!" sound). But such station will come up with bigger tensions in registration with neighbouring scans when you use target registration.

Re: FARO S150 Leveling
I've seen this on almost every scan project we do with the FARO, and it seems to come down to how well we level the instrument based on the inclinometer as to how tilted it is. And when I say tilted I'm talking about 1" - 3" so not much but too much when doing asbuilts.
I have no issues when we georeference it to control. This is only with a complete assumed datum.

Re: FARO S150 Leveling
Shaun,
I see that the S150 has exactly the same dual axes compensatory which are accurate to 19 arc seconds so max out would be 0.01' per 100' if the scanner is set up within 2° of level.
If you are setting it up within 2 or 3 arc seconds of level and getting bad results something is wrong with your scanner.
Is the componser turned on?
If you meant 2 or 3 inches of level that would be out of range for the componsators to correct.
I usually set 3 checkered targets at extremities of the site and shoot them in with my Leica total station and scanner to be sure the scans are level and celebrated.
Since you're a LS too that would be easy for you to do at least to determine if the scanner has an issue.
I hope this is helpful.
Paul

Re: FARO S150 Leveling
Something is wrong. Maybe your level is turned off? Are you using cyclone to do the registration? Cyclone artificially tilts faro scans on import.Slewis33 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 1:20 pm I've seen this on almost every scan project we do with the FARO, and it seems to come down to how well we level the instrument based on the inclinometer as to how tilted it is.
