FARO S70 - Hot Shoe WIFI range extender needed

Post by bruce_raymond »

Hi all - we have a new S70 scanner in house - our scans are used as a basis to do modifications to existing facilities in the Bakersfield oil patch, and required scan coverage is often over 1000's of feet.. during scanning temperatures often top 110 degrees f and we must remain inside out truck during scanning but our scans are often over 100ft away from our truck.. making our auto-upload & registration thru our HP Z-book & remote control thru our smartphones impossible. I'm pretty sure the same situation occurs while scanning in extreme cold situations as well
I know the S70 has a "hot shoe" on the top - and I am wondering what it would take to install a wifi signal amplifier - as the standard unit has a range of only 100ft or so.. Cheers

How do your keep your scanner from not over heating in the 110 F conditions. Mine wants to shut off in heat that is in the 90's.

Caddman - the S70 model has a higher maximum operating temperature (50C) than the older X and 120 models..(40C??)
if your in a crunch and need to expose your older scanner to higher operating temperatures try this:
1) Faro sells an "insulating kit" to assist in ultra low temp scanning - modding it to allow open flow to the ventilation areas on the bottom of the scanner would probably help, or you can make one out of a dash protector window folding cover..
2) keep your extra batteries cold - it seems that most of the heat is generated internally within the onboard battery and when the scanner complains or shuts down from high heat try keep flipping out your batteries ( with the cold ones from inside your truck A/C - amazing but it works for us here..

Never thought about the batteries and keeping them cold or cooler. I keep them out of the sun but don't run the truck when not close by it.

Do you have a link to the kit you mentioned?

Thanks again for the suggestions. I am interested in the WIFI extender also.

Hot & colt cover for Faro S70
https://knowledge.faro.com/Hardware/3D_ ... -S150-S350

but keep your extra batteries cold as possible in heat & hot as possible in cold... I will even switch out batteries at only 1/2 depleted..
Cheers

It would have been a few years ago if you search for it, but I remember one of the regulars here shared an origami cover for their Faro. By covering the sides in white paper and increasing its albedo they were able to significantly extend its usable temperature range.

I love how Faro increased the operating temperature range of the S series... and then made them black  Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

There are some good resources about the accessory bay ports in this thread.

From one of my comments:

https://knowledge.faro.com/Hardware/Las ... r_Scanners

Above is a link to download the CAD model for the connector interfaces.

https://knowledge.faro.com/Hardware/Las ... he_Focus_S

Above is a link to the automation manual for the FARO FOCUS S scanner. Note that the black accessory bay port is a USB port. The Red accessory bay port is a CAN-Bus port. The pin-out diagrams for both ports are in this manual, along with a sample wiring diagram. It appears both ports have a 14.4-19V pin and ground for powering accessories.

There is lots of fun stuff in the Automation Interface Manual, but the material relevant to the accessory bay ports starts on page 49.

https://knowledge.faro.com/Hardware/Las ... er_Scanner

Above is information about the FOCUS S LS SDK and API. The one you need to control the scanner is the SDK-DEV or the SCENE Stand-alone API. You will need to contact your FARO Rep or Customer Support and sign an NDA and such. If you are not a programmer, or don't have access to a programming team, this probably will not be of much use to you.

As I recall, Jonathan Coco did a project a while back where he added a battery operated repeater to the one of the older scanners and this was able to get him much farther away. I don't think you would need to plug into the scanner as you could easily adapt an external battery mounted on the tripod.
