I am surprised so many people have had issues with the S series mount. Speaking to Faro it seemed like we were the only ones having the quick release issue. One of our Engineers spoke to one of his friend who has a S Series Scanner and Faro told him the same thing that they have not come across a lot of quick release issue. We recently had the mount stuck to the scanner for which we had to send the scanner back to faro. Basically the entire mount with the Module rotates and there is no way to get the screw out. Faro has given us a quote of 2885 $ plus tax to fix the scanner. They need to change the Pan Module which itself is like 2700 $. It is really frustrating to pay for something that is a design flaw.
Please PM me with details and the name of your FARO points of contact.

Yes I have the same issue, I had to disassemble it from the tripod few times, and work on it separately somewhere safe, I had the feeling that one day I will have a major accident with it. I ended up removing it all together and currently using the old one I have for the S120 and purchased another one. This is a poorly designed item and is a bottle neck and keeps me worried all the time.
It's a good time to rethink the quick release base issue. No one wants to have an accident mounting and dismounting equipment. Years ago I purchased a 'leveling' pano head to use with my Focus 120, for setups that exceeded the internal 15º limit of the scanner (generally outdoors). The tripod no longer needed to be anything but stable, since the leveling head would take care of 'level' in a second. It's very useful in hilly San Francisco. I've never looked back. I have the original Gitzo pano head that came from FARO (almost new), if that interests you (if it works with the new FARO scanners -the Sunwayfoto 90R is the better way, IMHO).
Mine is a SUNWAYFOTO DYH 90Ri : Available at Amazon, BH photo etc.:
https://www.amazon.com/SUNWAYFOTO-DYH-9 ... SUNWAYFOTO You will also need an 'Arca' type quick-release plate.

If a tribrach setup is needed, you might look here:

or here, for something else:

Hi, do you have a photo of your setup? I would like to have a bubble for my scanner set up and your sunwayfoto looks like an alternative, but what do you mean i would need the arca quick release? Currently I am using the standard quick release form faro.

Here is a good link to Sunwayfoto, itself -with photos (one including my scanner) and some other mounting options:
http://www.sunwayfoto.com/e_goodsDetail.aspx?gId=1114
DYH-90R&DLC-60L (I would probably get this one next time)

Not the best photo (below), but it's one I had available. The bubble level (not shown) work quite well. You can see the quick release plate just below the Focus base. It's longer than one probably needs, but it is very secure. Look at the Amazon 'Frequently bought together' picture found in the Amazon link I posted for the Sunway base. This round 'Arca' type, quick-release plate should work just as well.

Has anyone received a replacement mount yet? What are your thoughts?

Thanks to everyone on this forum. Faro did fix the pan module for no charge and let us try the new s series mount. The mount design is very similar to the X330 mount. It is definitely much better. I am not sure if it is going to be a factory recall for all the S series users but I hope it is as most of the users are having mount issues.

The scanner we have as a loaner has this mount. It got stuck the first time we tried to use it and as others have stated I had to remove it from the scanner and had to be quite forceful with it to get it apart. Needless to say, it went back in the case never to come out again. Does anyone know if the new mount is compatible with the Istar like the x330 mount was?

We setup our scanner when it was mainly warm and went out in the cold. I could not remove the S series mount after it got cold. I tried forcefully but then chose to unscrew the scanner. Quite by accident I had the locked up adapters in my office and when I checked them a couple of days later at room temperature, they almost feel apart.

I know how hard I tried to pull them apart and I think the new adapters (currently have one) had some tolerance issues. The new ones are much better as they have gone back to the X series style with some additional safety features and you can easily rotate the head of the scanner. It's a much better design now in my opinion.
