There is no way that your scanner will fall from quality carbon fiber tripod (at least not from benro or gitzo). There are limiters on the legs that limits the angle of the legs (3 positions on benro). Only strong wind bursts can do the damage if you're not careful. I can't imagine doing my job with wooden tripod (narrow passages to attics, etc...)

I'm sure for all lighter scanners but i don't trust a vz400i on these tripods. Sturdy wooden tripods on rolling carts is the way to go there.

The new VZ600i will be for sure handy on these kind of tripods.

Nino and Lieven

Both you folks are right, but I just received my Benro C3780TN + Benro blue lined bag + 3 different screw on sets of leg tips and it looked great. I still have not placed our VZ400i on it yet since I will receive my 3/8 to 5/8 adapter from Amazon that cost me US$0.72 on May 1.

I decided since there are only 2 Benro C3780TN tripods left in stock, for US$248.00 + tax + $31 freight I could not lose, so I ordered another tripod.

Our Nedo tripod 210670-185 weighs 15-lbs and the Manfrotto 114 weighs 11-lbs (both indestructible), but we are also looking for a lighter, smaller dolly.

$248 !
You should be so lucky, over here the cheapest is 469€, almost double the price. It's ridiculous as always

For those that are concerned about mounting a Riegl VZ400i on the Benro C3780TN fiber tripod, please note the information below. As Lieven has mentioned above, although the tripod has a capacity of 39 lbs, one always needs to be careful.

My 3/8 to 5/8 inch adapter is arriving tomorrow from Amazon, also note that Riegl has a probably better alternative as part-no. HW-GP-06-536-00, which will cost more than Amazon's US$0.72 (US72cents).

Since we are still waiting, I decided to use our SONY a7RV (see below) with 10mm Voightlander lens to use the 8K video function to see if we could capture multiple images of sufficient resolution and coverage to use in EPIC's Reality Capture software.

SONY a7RV.jpg

One of the problems with the SONY 8k video, is that is recorded in HEVC (H.265 codec) format which is not importable into Reality Capture software's MP4 or viewable with the standard W10 Pro MP4. You need to use Microsoft's convertor plug-in at the Microsoft Store for US$0.99 per PC workstation. Since I decided that an open source software to convert in to H.264 codec was a better alternative.

......
The US$0.72 adapter for a microphone from Amazon did not work because of the 5/8 inch thread was 24 instead of 11. I found another adapter locally for US$12.00 which was 3/8 inch-16 UNC thread female to 5/8 inch-11 UNC thread male, which is shown below. It works to hold the VZ400i to the Benro tripod, but there is a spacing between the Benro Tripod base plate and the VZ400i base.

NOTE THE SPACING BETWEEN THE FEMALE AND MALE THREADS

BENRO SHOULD HAVE A MOUNT SIMILAR TO MANFROTTO 324 BELOW. I have not found it.

Always a difficult task finding the right threads.

But be careful Dennis, the forces a vz400i puts on these small parts is enormous, therefore i'm always more a classic tripod guy because the instrument stands with it's full circonference on the base plate of the tripod and therefore the forces are more spread (hence less dangerous).

But that's just my opinion. ;)

Lieven

You are correct, and that is why we will not use the adapter.

I have some parts machined to use with my riegl. I took a 5/8" thread to a machineshop and he made some duplicates and welded them on base plates. Very sturdy
