Riegl VZ-400i camera question

Post by Attreyu »

Hi,

I know that the VZ-400i can be augmented with a DSLR of the customer's choice.

I assume that after the scan registration, you come up with a RGB point-cloud of high precision.

Is it possible to convert that into a HDR textured mesh ?

Last question, the answer is pretty much obvious, but can the customer merge the pointclouds scanned by the terestrial and the aerial solutions, and then convert them to a HDR textured mesh ?

For example a VZ-400i for the terrrestrial scans, coupled with a Ricopter VUX-SYS.

If it's possible, please get in touch for further discussion about the pricing for such a solution.

Thanks,

Hi Dragos,

Yes, within our TLS software packages, e.g. RiSCAN PRO, the user can register the DSLR camera data to the LiDAR after scan registration to create a highly accurate RGB point cloud. Within this software, the user is able to create a polydata to convert the data (or area of interest) into an HDR textured mesh.

Although our kinematic systems, e.g. the VUX-SYS integrated with the RiCOPTER UAV, use a different software package for data registration (RiPROCESS), it is possible to export the data from RiPROCESS into *.rdb – the RIEGL database file, which can be directly imported into RiSCAN PRO, and merged with the TLS data

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Jillian,

Many thanks for clarifying the process !

Since the two systems use different cameras ie. DSLR vs other type of camera on the Ricopter, wouldn't be any issues in applying the material during the last step in RiScan Pro ? I don't know, different resolutions or sizes for the captured texture images which would need to be processed - color equalisation springs into mind.

I mean, I know that the final pointcloud will be perfect, but I'm worried about the texturing quality - visible "patches" for example.

Right now we use photogrammetry and Agisoft Photoscan returns beautiful textured models, just to give you a bit of perspective. It's nice but it doesn't give us the kind of precision that we would expect, in comparison with Lidar.

Best,

RiScanPro does have the capability to create meshes but only to a certain extent. For topo surfaces the mesh tool works very well but for objects with more dynamic surfaces, there are third party software packages (Audodesk Meshmixer) that can do a better job.
What type of objects/surfaces are you trying to create meshes on?
Yes, it is very possible to merge/integrate/register data sets from any of our LiDAR platforms within our software packages.
