Is the Trimble X7 a good fit for large scale projects and datasets???

Post by Kruse »

Hello everyone! I'm trying to get an understanding from those that use the X7 scanner and the size of projects they've used it with some success. Beyond that, how well Trimble Perspective works with single datasets/projects in excess of 150 setups with images captured for everything.

Is the X7 a realistic scanner to use on large scale projects (1,000,000 SF+)? How well does it work when loading large coordination models into the tablet to compare scans with while out in the field (if that's even a realistic goal)? Is the geo-referencing in the field accurate for datasets with large SF's captured where you get further and further away from your starting point's control points? Do you still need RealWorks to process in the office/tighten up the registration? Is Trimble Perspective only Cloud to Cloud, or can you register using targets when in the field?

If you had a single dataset with 100 medium density scans (standard quality) with high quality images (no HDR) on for each setup, how long would that take to capture the data in the field, process, and have a usable/accurate point cloud for comparing against a design model. (Assuming it's an easy dataset to capture, cloud to cloud registration, no hiccups while scanning, etc.)

I'm getting a demo setup with an X7 later this week, but wanted to get an understanding from those that use it day in, day out and isn't just giving me a sales pitch for the couple hours I'll get hands on with it. ;)

Any help or further insight into this product would be greatly appreciated!!

I don`t know bout X7 but with Z+F5016 it will take 3.30 minutes to take 360x320 scan in high detail(1.30 min for lower res) and another 3 min for HDR imaging. While taking the images the scan data will transfer to your tablet and ready for detailed scans or checking also the C2C registration is . So roughly 7 minutes per setup, you are looking at 11 hours for scanning 100 scans.

From what i've read and seen the x7 seems a good instrument for smaller projects and topos. It isn't the fastest, nor the slowest scanner about but having to use a tablet constantly to control the scanner is a real negative point (in my workflows).

Also the tablet seems to overheat fast (new should be in the makes).

a standard scan seems to take about 3,5 minutes and add 3 minutes for hdr. As i said, good for small to medium projects but i wouldn't start large scale warehouses etc with it.

The advantage is the self leveling and you'll be in the Trimble ecosystem softwarewise. They make good stuff.

All in all to me this looks like a beginner's scanner. Soon the limitations will occur and you wished you'd bought somethign better.

Its not got that big a range and your stuck using a tablet - i would never buy a scanner that needed this as its something else to drop, fail, die and carry.

You will probably want P40 (slow image capture!) , ZF5016 or Trimble equivalent. Maybe even the top end Faro. Then Riegl but that maybe out of the budget.

We mainly use P40 and RTC360 - if you wanted 100 scans medium density (3.1mm @ 10m, which on P40 as 120m range, RTC360 60m range), you are looking at the P40 less than 4 minutes per scan and up to 15 minutes for images depending on the light...... RTC360 including its extra level spin well under 4 minutes for it all.

Registration - depending on the site, it could all connect perfectly using smart align in Cyclone... Or a bad site with loads dead ends a few hours even with using VIS on the RTC360.

Cleaning will be similar time not matter what scanner you use, just some software maybe quicker than others. I prefer Cyclone Core and clean per scan model space with various keyboard shortcuts to speed things up.

I always love these posts. The guy asks for a certain scanner and everyoine tells him to buy another one. LOL

HAHAHA, That's how it seems to always work out! I don't think a Riegl is a viable option for us though ;) Sorry....

We have some large projects coming up over the next couple years (One of them being over a 1,000,000 SF and built out over two years) and are just evaluating our options with scanners for the time being. The Trimble scanners are uncharted territory for us and that's why I'm reaching out for other's input... From the sounds of it right now, the X7 is more for small scale projects and those that don't want to leave the Trible ecosystem at the cost to productivity and how much can be done in one day. There are several systems that look to be much faster overall for large datasets and projects.

As always, I appreciate everyone's input thus far. Keep it coming!!

I didn't mention Riegl in this thread πŸ˜‰

I did  :D

One thing you should also look at, is what are you doing with the data once its registered?

I know most of us have suggested another scanner, but the X7 is a brilliant bit of kit. I had a demo of it but it just didnt fit in to our tool kit or work flow.

Is it an official Trimble dealer giving you the demo? If so get another Trimble scanner along at the same time. If its a not, get another brands scanner at the same time and figure out the work flow and the numbers.

It's an official dealer that's giving me a demo (in 30 minutes, haha). I've got an RTC 360 scanner currently and will do some comparisons after the fact, but I've only got a couple hours with the unit so it will be a bit limited on what we can all cover and amount of scans to capture... Trying to wrap my head around the workflow and the tablet/Perspective combo more than anything.

RTC360 as a demo unit or part of your current gear?
