colorizing SX10 scans

Post by blazaj »

Hi everybody,

I have a question for Trimble SX10 scanning total station users here on the forum. I'm renting the instrument to capture a church tower of app. 50m height and produce orthophotos of its facade. I plan to take partial high detail scans with SX10 to capture the tower from all sides. I'll try to use internal SX10 camera for colorization of the scans. But to make sure I get good quality color information I will also use Gigapan with DSLR to shoot panoramas from scanner positions. The question is, is it possible to colorize SX10 scans with non paralax external photos / panoramas? In other words can I export gridded scans from SX10 in E57 or any other format?

Many thanks for any suggestions!
Regards
Jiri

Using Trimble RealWorks, it is possible to convert your SX10 scans to TZF files. Then you can use RealColor to colorize without parallax using a panorama. You will also be able to export into another supported gridded format (eg: E57, PTX).

Thank you Guillaume,

that's exactly what I need. I wanted to take the colorization to Faro Scene I'm more familiar with. Is it possible to colorize partial scans in TRW? I did some tests with Real Color, but I suceeded with full 360 scans + 360 panoramas only, not cropped ones.

We are working on a very similar issue. Long range vertical wall sections where we don’t have a full dome scan, just window scans plus partial panoramas taken with dslr inc telephoto lens.

I’d be keen to put our heads together on this if you are still working on it.

Hi Alex,

I managed to projet single photos and partial panoramas on scans, pointclouds and meshes in TRW with Image Matching tool (Production Mode - Imaging - Image Matching) You have to take each individuial picture or panorama and show several identical pairs of points on it and in the pointcloud. Then you can use matched photos for coloring pointclouds or meshes inside TRW. Maybe you want to give it a try and see for yourself if it works with your panoramas.

Cheers

Thanks jiri

We have done quite a bit with this tool.

We sometimes get inconsistent results though and when putting two adjacent scans together.

i.e. the colourization between two scans sometimes does not align and it can be time consuming to fix.

On a few scans/small job this would not be an issue. But we are currently working on a very big project.

Have you had any other experiences with similar software?

All the best.

Alex.

I know, it's far from perfect. Lens distortion does influence the matching accuracy not mentioning panorama stitching. In the past I used to proces photos in Photomodeler software and use its engine to colorize pointclouds. I think it was a bit more accurate due to the camera calibration process but even more tedious. If your primary concern is the photo/texture detail photogrammetry will give you much better results.

Good luck with your project!

Jiri
