Leica launch new laser scanners

Post by luggage »

Leica have just posted a video on their YouTube channel showing the next generation of laser scanners. More details to follow but this video talks about the passion and vision that Leica have brought to the next generation of laser scanners, superseding the P20 and the C10.

The 2 new flag ship scanners are the P30 and P40. Both of these units bring big changes to the raw hardware inside the cases, offering amazing levels of detail with great clarity, at range. A great scanning solution when every detail matters. Full details will follow, but for those of you wanting to discuss this in any more detail then please do not hesitate to give me a call (tomorrow...)

What is the main difference between P20 and P30/P40? Apart from the range, HDR and external camera.
Thanks.

The huge difference is quality, Quality like you have never seen before, with sub mm range noise and the p40 able to vary the resolution as well as real long range data. Don't just look at the box look at what comes out and what it can do to your workflow.

Interesting systems. The longer range, faster scan rate, and integrated HDR are all nice improvements over the C10. It's also nice to see an eye safe laser in the new systems. Personally I'm a little disappointed to see that the new scanners still retain the same 13 kg form factor as the increased scan rate is going to make setup time an even larger percentage of total project time. Not to mention the pain of traveling with gear. Integrated GPS (with corresponding support in Cyclone) would also have been nice to see.

Steve, I wonder if you could elaborate a little more on which parts of the specs you think are amazing? The lower range noise compared to the C10 is nice, but basically on par with what other vendors are providing. Overall, from looking at the accuracy specs I would expect the data to be a little better than a C10 but not dramatically so. It looks like in most situations point accuracy is still going to be limited by beam diameter (those pesky laws of physics).

Don't get me wrong, the scanners look like a nice evolutionary step. I'm just not seeing anything revolutionary. Honestly, I would have been pretty surprised if a revolutionary static scanner had been announced. I think most of the low hanging fruit has already been cleaned off that tree by now.

Hi Steven,

The Batch job scanning, is it like the HDS8810/HDS8400 where it can create a selection of an area to scan and then scan one by one? Thanks.

Cheers,
Freddie
