RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
Hi Guys,
Anyone could recommend an alternative to Leica backpack to carry RTC360 scanner? We've been experiencing broken zips /handles on majority of them and these are quite expensive. Backpacks gives us a freedom of climbing ladders so I wouldn't like to swap back to the case.
Thanks.

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
Maybe it is better to fix it you can bring it to any dressmaker. I suppose it is cheaper to replace a zip and stich the handle. And that way it won't end up in land fills.MacH wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:26 am Hi Guys,

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
In my opinion you should always keep it stored in a proper Leica Red Box. I think those back packs were a bit of a gimmick. You spend that much on a machine to keep it in a soft case. It’s accident waiting to happen. They look cool but that won’t matter when you’ve got a broken 40k plus scanner.
I know you mentioned ladders. But I would find a different solution.
Again just my opinion.
817063 is Leicas number for it.

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
I had my zippers fail as well after a year and a half of almost daily use. The zipper was fine, but it was the metal pull slide that was failing (I forget the name for them). Took it to a local seamstress business and the swapped out the pull slides and it's been working perfect since. Much smoother than the original zippers ever were. The new zipper pull slide brand was YKK if that helps. The zipper portion that sews onto the backpack itself, if that's failed or damaged, you might be out of luck. Due to the odd size, I guess it doesn't really fit under sewing machines and therefore might not be replaceable and you're better off buying a new back for $400 or so. For use though, replacing the zipper slides and patching a few holes on the padding that were wearing away was like $45 total, so much better than buying a new backpack.MacH wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 8:26 am Hi Guys,

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
Thanks for all the replies.
Agree best would be to fix the broken backpack as these are dedicated to the scanner. Although, it's frustrating that 270 pound worth backpack breaks after a year of use. Durability of that product is questionable.
If anyone wonder, RTC360 fits well into that one https://www.manfrotto.com/uk-en/advance ... ma3-bp-bf/. I would personally get a dedicated foam to give the scanner extra protection.
I don't mind using backpacks as long as these have back access and scanner is well secured. Our scanning environment includes daily climbing access platforms / stairs and transfers between them so at the end of the day there is gain in productivity while using a backpack as opposed to pulling / lowering the case on a rope.

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
If I was looking for an alternative I would take the linner from the old one and take it with you to a good camera shop and see if it fits snugly or fit extra strong foam if its loose inside. the RTC one supplied is made by Manfroto but I couldn't get anything out of them as to getting it fixed under any sort of warenty.
I'm on my third bag with 2 of them having had the top zip of the pocket break (all my demo units did the same thing.) There is a weak point when you pick it up by one shoulder strap and the zip is partially open. My local key cutting place (Timpson) said they would be able to replace the top zip for a stronger one but they have to send it off and would take about a week. Keeping any new one you find under the carry on size will also help.

Re: RTC360 Backpack Alternatives
I use an Osprey Farpoint 40. You can fit the Leica foam insert in it, and it has a couple of straps to hold it down. It leaves enough space to pack a day or two of clothes if you just want to do carryon at the airport. There are a couple of straps on the outside as well, and that's where I hang the tripod from. It also has enough space to hold a full sized 17.3" laptop.
Osprey is a fantastic company and I have been using their backpacks/luggage for over a decade and never had a single problem with them.
