You can go with the E57 into Recap and retain the mirror balls. As long as you haven't unified the data first.

Why not just publish directly to the rcp format (with setups) from Register 360?

That would be a great output however Register 360 doesn't support keeping the 360 images intact when you do this...? See attached image from release notes. Please correct me if i am wrong...
