Leica BLK360 Tripod Adapter Unscrew

Post by engaemahfouz »

I am using the Leica BLK Tripod provided with the BLK unit. But I am suffering from the short tripod provided. When I am trying to unscrew the adapter from BLK tripod to be able to use any other better camera tripod, it never get unscrewed.

Any thoughts about how to unscrew the blk tripod adapter or I have to buy a new adapter.

I think these should screw off but I haven't had any luck trying to get one off either.

Might be easier just to buy a replacement - https://www.sccssurvey.co.uk/blk360-tripod-adapter.html

There are some guys that successfully have removed it. Our crew chief took it home and gave up after it appeared it would damage the tripod tube.
Before we bought a heavier elevating scanner tripod ($650), we had an emergency forensic job that we needed height of scanner on. I was able to get parts at LOWES to Jerry-rig a 3 foot extension pipe that we placed on a standard 5/8" Tripod puck on top of a normal survey instrument tripod.
About $30 in parts.
It worked pretty well and it allowed (with a Plastic "flagging bushing") to take the plug out of the lower end of the Tripod tube, slip the ENTIRE tube down over the home-made heavy conduit extension held snug with the busing so no "torque" slippage would happen during picture taking mode (See another thread about this when using a 5/8" to 1/4" or 3/8" adapter with the provided BLK360 adapter connector ($120). We have even just set the scanner on the Flat plane of a tripod while standing by it in a pinch. The rubber feet keep the very lightweight scanner pretty stable

Hi All-

The piece on top of the Leica Tripod doesn't screw off. It looks like it should, but the tripod will break before it screws off.

You can get the tripod adapter separately from the BLK Website. This will mount on a camera tripod or baseplate. We also have a Tribrach Adapter, which will mount the BLK360 on any survey tribrach. Both of these are on the BLK website, under 'Accessories.'

We were at a conference and someone knocked our BLK off a table. The tripod mount broke off and now we just screw it on top. The actually tripod adapter to purchase along is like $130 or something...

I'm looking into this too.
It seems that Leica just sells 1/4 adaptor, while the one on the top of the tripod is 5/8

Nice to see you actually have an adapter fully suited for a standard tribrach now! without piecing it out....

The adapter is held in by red loctite and can only be removed with heat. Remove the O-ring a the base of the adapter. Place the shaft in a vice firmly and protect it from scratching. Get a torch and heat the joint evenly and slowly. Don't heat the outside, heat the joint. Put on a pair of thick leather gloves that have good grip and heat resistance and start unscrewing it. Do a little at a time. I've successfully removed two easily without damage.

Good luck.
